New music
Cool new music from all around the world, here are some recent (and future) releases of interest:

Miriodor - Signal 9
31 years after its first album, Miriodor's latest album, entitled
Signal 9, has just been released on Cuneiform Records.

"Metaphorically, we could say that Miriodor is a planet, with aliens communicating in their mysterious ways with planet Earth," says Miriodor's keyboardist, Pascal Globensky. In that sense, the long-lived Montreal band's ninth album, entitled Signal 9, could simply be considered the ninth set of musical messages from that exotic heavenly body.

The Miriodor discography has been building strength upon strength with each successive album. The band combines jazz, classical, rock, and international influences for an arresting, idiosyncratic sound that eludes description but remains immediately identifiable as Miriodor.

Picking up where the most recent coded message from planet Miriodor, 2013's Cobra Fakir, left off, Signal 9 arrives like an invitation to an otherworldly voyage. Each track marks another twist and turn in a journey across strange, captivating landscapes populated by creatures, crafts, and constructions whose like has never been glimpsed outside the band's idiosyncratic ecosystem.

Globensky, drummer Rémi Leclerc, and guitarist Bernard Falaise have expanded Miriodor to a quartet with the addition of bassist Nicolas Lessard as a full-time member. Accordingly, the band works like a one eight-handed, four-brained organism here, operating more organically and collectively than ever.

And while Miriodor often forges some of their heaviest sounds to date over the course of Signal 9, the album is also loaded with off-the-wall humor and some beautiful, contemplative melodic moments. The combination makes for some crafty contrasts, frequently flipping back and forth drastically from one mood to another multiple times within a single composition for a jarring-but-thrilling effect.

Once you return to your everyday life after emerging from the alternative universe of Signal 9, the whole album seems like some kind of fever dream you've just emerged from. But the big difference is that it's a dream you're eager to leap right back into again.

The album will be available through Cuneiform Records, and at all good record stores, including Archambault and Freeson Rock.

Steven Wilson - To The Bone
Steven Wilson's long awaited 5th studio solo album, entitled
To The Bone, will be released in early August. Listen to the first video of the album, Pariah.

"My fifth record is in many ways inspired by the hugely ambitious progressive pop records that I loved in my youth (think Peter Gabriel’s So, Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love, Talk Talk’s Colour of Spring and Tears for Fears’ Seeds of Love).

Lyrically, the album’s eleven tracks veer from the paranoid chaos of the current era in which truth can apparently be a flexible notion, observations of the everyday lives of refugees, terrorists and religious fundamentalists, and a welcome shot of some of the most joyous wide-eyed escapism I’ve created in my career so far. Something for all the family!" – Steven Wilson

Here is the track list:
1. To The Bone (6.41)
2. Nowhere Now (4.04)
3. Pariah (4.44)
4. The Same Asylum As Before (5.14)
5. Refuge (6.42)
6. Permanating (3.35)
7. Blank Tapes (2.09)
8. People Who Eat Darkness (6.03)
9. Song of I (5.22)
10. Detonation (9.20)
11. Song of Unborn (5.56)

The album will be available in 2-LP vinyl edition, regular CD version, and a very special 2CD/Blu-Ray/DVD/7 inch deluxe hardback book edition, available through Universal, and at all good record stores, including Archambault and Freeson Rock.

Yes, featuring Anderson, Rabin and Wakeman
YES featuring Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin, Rick Wakeman will play at the Théâtre St-Denis on
Tuesday, September 19, 2017.

Rock icons Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin and Rick Wakeman are proud to announce that effective immediately, they will officially be known as ‘YES featuring Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin, Rick Wakeman’, which is the name they will be touring under in North America during the latter half of 2017.

“It’s very simple,’ explains band founder and vocalist Jon Anderson. “The fans want it, we want it and it’s our right to use the name. YES music is in our DNA!” The definitive lineup of the greatest progressive rock band ever – Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin, Rick Wakeman, will be together again LIVE!

Since reuniting for a U.S. tour in 2016, YES featuring Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin, Rick Wakeman have performed sold-out shows in Israel, the UK, Belgium and Holland, and have a Japanese tour scheduled for April. Due to public demand, they return to tour the U.S. and Canada from August 26th through October 11th. In addition to the tour dates, the trio will be recording new material throughout the summer for a projected album release of early 2018. Also upcoming is a DVD that was filmed at the final UK show of their recent European tour (at Manchester Apollo, on March 25th), for release later this year. And to the delight of longtime YES fans, all three were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Fame on April 7th.

The most successful prog rock group of all time, YES, was co-founded by Jon Anderson and the late Chris Squire in 1968 and went on to sell millions of units with releases such as Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales From Topographic Oceans, Going For The One and 90125, as well as embarking on several record-breaking world tours. Whilst Rick is predominantly associated with the ’70s “prog era” of the band (which saw YES become a worldwide stadium headliner) and Trevor associated with the ’80s “pop era” of the band (which furthered the band’s popularity – including the band’s biggest chart success), Jon is the bridge between both factions (as he was a member of both eras). The touring band line-up is completed by two extraordinary musicians – Lee Pomeroy on bass and Louis Molino III on drums – who help to ensure that YES’ immaculate artistic legacy remains intact.

Doors at 7:00 PM, show at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $79.75 to $135.25 through the Théâtre St-Denis boxoffice.

Swedish Progressive pioneers, Isildur's Bane and Marillion vocalist Steve Hogarth join forces on the new 2017 album
Colours Not Found In Nature. Comprising six songs composed by Isildur's Bane's musical director and keyboard player Mats Johansson, along with Steve Hogarth, the richly detailed recordings feature tuned percussion, strings, woodwind, brass and voices, all within an integrated suite-like album structure. Both a departure for Steve Hogarth and a stunning return for Isildur's Bane, the album incorporates elements of Rock, traditional music, Jazz and contemporary Classical in one brilliantly unified world. Available at all good indie record stores, including Freeson.

Lonely Robot - The Big Dream
Lonely Robot
, the project masterminded by producer, guitarist and singer/songwriter John Mitchell (It Bites, Frost*, Arena), has announced that its much-anticipated second studio album
The Big Dream will be released on 28th April 2017. Following 2015’s acclaimed debut Please Come Home, The Big Dream has a core theme running through it – one that sees The Astronaut, the central character in the Lonely Robot adventure, emerging from a long period in stasis. “The key inspiration for Lonely Robot comes from my love of science fiction films, and the atmospheric soundtracks that often accompany them – such as Alan Silvestri’s compositions for Contact and Clint Mansell’s work for Moon. The album once again features drums by Craig Blundell (Steven Wilson), with all other instrumentation on the album delivered by Mitchell himself. The Big Dream will be available as a special edition digipak CD (including 3 bonus tracks), gatefold 2LP + CD, and digital download, available through InsideOut music and at all good indie record stores, including Freeson.

Magenta - We Are Legend
The seventh studio album from British progressive rock band Magenta, We Are Legend features just three songs – two 11-minute tracks and a 26-minute epic. Rob Reed says: "Magenta have gone through a lot since the last album, especially lead vocalist Christina Booth, so I think we feel we have something to prove with this album. So be prepared.” This is easily Magenta's best release in at least ten years. A must for fans, and a good place for those unfamiliar to start. It is rare to say that about a band's seventh studio release, but We Are Legend is definitely a return to form and a very entertaining listen. Available through Bandcamp and at all good indie record stores, including Freeson.

Ayreon - The Source
The Source
is the ninth studio album from Arjen Anthony Lucassen's progressive metal/rock opera project Ayreon, released on April 28, 2017. As with every Ayreon album, it is a concept album with each character being portrayed by one singer. Unlike the previous album The Theory of Everything, it marks a return to science fiction and the Ayreon storyline; it acts, in particular, as a prequel to 01011001, making it the first album in the storyline's chronology. It's Lucassen's first album under his new label, Mascot Label Group. In the typical style of the project, the album features several guest singers to portray the characters across the album; although Lucassen usually prefers to work only once with a same singer in Ayreon, he mostly cast returning performers for The Source, including James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Simone Simons (Epica), Floor Jansen (Nightwish), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia), Tommy Karevik (Kamelot, Seventh Wonder), and Russell Allen (Symphony X), together with newcomers such as Tommy Rogers (Between the Buried and Me), for a total of eleven main vocalists. The 2-CD album is available through Amazon and at all good indie record stores, including Freeson.

Tears for Fears in Montreal!
Evenko presents Tears For Fears, featuring Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, at the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier de la Place des Arts in Montreal, on
Thursday, June 22, 2017!

An omnipresent fixture in the early days of music video, Tears For Fears brought Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith into the pop music spotlight via their 1983 debut album The Hurting, a sophisticated collection of inward-looking, electro-tinged pop songs including Mad World, Pale Shelter and Change, all Top 10 hits in the band’s British homeland.

In an attempt to satisfy the international demand for the band, the group then spent an extended period touring and promoting their next album around the world: Songs from the Big Chair which included the #1 hits, Shout, and Everybody Wants to Rule the World. A time that, as we would later see, would take its toll on the band in the days to come. Tears For Fears continued, and indeed when Big Chair’s follow-up Sowing The Seeds Of Love emerged four years later, it soared into the Top 10 and offered the No. 2 smash The Seeds Of Love.

In 1990, the group split to pursue their career on each side. It was almost 15 years later that the duo met again, in 2004. Where it went is into the heart of Everybody Loves A Happy Ending, a title the pair couldn’t help but hang on their new album, and an inescapable truism their reunion solidly reinforces.

Chart toppers Tears for Fears’ most recent studio album, 2004’s critically acclaimed Everybody Loves A Happy Ending, signaled a welcome return for one of the biggest and best-loved bands of the post-MTV age, as well as one of the most eagerly anticipated reunions in pop music history.

“This is the album that should have followed Seeds Of Love in many ways,” said singer-songwriter Roland Orzabal, who for the first time since the album’s 1989 release was rejoined by TFF cofounder Curt Smith. The results were standout tracks like Closest Thing To Heaven, Call Me Mellow and Who Killed Tangerine. They spent the next year and half on a worldwide tour supporting the album playing to sold out crowds and enthusiastic fans.

Tears For Fears continues to sell out shows throughout the world. And rumor has it that the band will be releasing a new album this Fall...

Door at 7:00 PM, show at 8:00 PM. Ticket are $73.25 to $139.75 (including taxes and service fees), available starting May 5 at noon through evenko or at the Place des Arts boxoffice.

John Wetton dies at 67
Legendary bassist/vocalist and FMPM alumni John Wetton passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2017. The bassist and frontman for Asia as well as a former member of King Crimson and UK, has died at the age of 67 after a long and brave battle with cancer. John's last visits in Montreal were in 2011 with Asia, in 2012 again with Asia and UK and in 2013 with UK.

Here is Carl Palmer's statement on the passing of his friend: "With the passing of my good friend and musical collaborator, John Wetton, the world loses yet another musical giant. John was a gentle person who created some of the most lasting melodies and lyrics in modern popular music. As a musician, he was both brave and innovative, with a voice that took the music of asia to the top of the charts around the world. His ability to triumph over alcohol abuse made him an inspiration to many who have also fought that battle. For those of us who knew him and worked with him, his valiant struggle against cancer was a further inspiration. I will miss his talent, his sense of humor and his infectious smile. May you ride easy, my old friend." - Carl Palmer- January 31, 2017.

Bryan Ferry at Théâtre St-Denis
Glam Rock legend and lead singer of Roxy Music Bryan Ferry will be at Théâtre St-Denis (1594 St-Denis Street, Montreal) on Monday, April 3, 2017.

From his earliest recordings with Roxy Music at the beginning of the 1970s, Bryan Ferry has taken his place as one of the most iconic and innovative artists to emerge in popular music. In his work you hear a vocal and lyrical brilliance that merges the intensity of Lou Reed, the poise of Sinatra and the charisma of Serge Gainsbourg. But then there is something extra - a verve and performance so ultra-modern that it continually breaks new ground.

Avonmore, Ferry's fourteenth solo album, was hailed by fans and critics alike as a modern classic in the tradition of Another Time Another Place and Boys and Girls. Quintessential Ferry, the musical mood of Avonmore was racing, edgy, brooding, cinematic. The album’s mix of emotional urgency and darkling intensity was brilliantly sustained, in both original compositions such as Soldier of Fortune (co-written with Johnny Marr), Lost and Loop de Li as well as bravura interpretations of Stephen Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns and Johnny and Mary by Robert Palmer. Thrillingly modern, utterly assured, Avonmore demonstrated all of the qualities that have made Bryan Ferry’s writing, arranging and vocal genius so iconic – tirelessly innovative, uniquely enthralling.

The show starts at 8:00 PM and tickets are $99.50, available online and at the Théâtre St-Denis box office.

Jeepsters in Brossard
David Bowie's tribute band The Jeepsters will be at Club Dix30 in Brossard on
Saturday, January 21, 2017.

Heavily influenced by David Bowie's music at an early age, these five musicians, all veterans of the rock scene, are inspired by Bowie in the Ziggy Stardust era, and revisit the "post-ziggy" material with the same energy as the "Spiders from mars".

This is not merely a tribute act, but a rock-solid band with a singer, whose voice is reminiscent of the master, celebrating Glam-style with more than 25 songs by the late great David Bowie ... "Without a doubt, Bowie is part of the genetic code of the Jeepsters. "

Show at 8pm. Regular tickets are priced at $ 25.75, available through Admission, Reserved Seats, 18+. Details at www.leclubdix30.com.

Huis is a prog rock group from Montreal formed in 2010 by Michel Joncas (bass, keyboards) and Pascal Lapierre (keyboards) as they were writing what would become their first album, Despite Guardian Angels. During the creative process, they enlisted the services of William Regnier (drums and percussion), Sylvain Descôteaux (vocals and keyboards) and Michel St-Père (guitars), the renowned leader of the band Mystery. Their first effort was acclaimed both by critics and fans worldwide.

After the release of the first album, Pascal Lapierre had to leave the group for family reasons and would ultimately be replaced by Johnny Maz in the fall of 2015. On May 1st 2016, the group launched its second album,
Neither in Heaven. This is a concept album featuring over 60 minutes of music that explored new musical horizons while maintaining the classical sound of the group. For this album, the group called upon some famous guest musicians including Gerben Klazinga, keyboardist of the Dutch group Knight Area. Huis will deliver its first European performance in 2017 as the group has been invited to play at Progdreams festival in Zoetermeer on March 4 in the company of Frost*, Karnataka and Barock Project.

Julien Vachon (formerly of HERE & Wireless Blue) is a singer-songwriter from Montreal. Having a strong appreciation for progressive rock, he writes music reminiscent of artists such as Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Riverside, while avoiding the infectious cynicism of these influences. With two EPs under his belt and a third in preparation, he has an active year ahead of him, including the release of an album. Visit https://julienvachon.bandcamp.com/ for excerpts!
