The Strawbs at théâtre Outremont
STRAWBS SHINE-ON IN BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE!
A review by Stephen Takacsy
After 2009's sold-out performance at Café Campus, the STRAWBS were invited back to Montreal to play in a much bigger venue, the majestic Outremont Theater. The old elegant concert hall suited the band and the music much better this time and the turn-out did not disappoint.

The boys came out blazing with a raunchy version of Turn Me Round (from
Deep Cuts) followed by the classic staple New World which Dave Cousins always nails with his insatiable vocals. The mellower Flower And The Young Man (also from Grave New World) gave some respite before a one-two punch of Chas Cronk's powerful Promised Land (from Nomadness) and another classic, Ghosts, both hair-raising renditions during which Dave Lambert was absolutely on fire! The delicate So Close And Yet So Far Away (also from Deep Cuts) allowed the band to catch their breath before the rocking epic Down By The Sea/The River (from Bursting at the Seams) closed off the first set.

The second set featured the highly anticipated and never done live before, entire
Hero and Heroine album, which the band hit out of the ball park. So intense and professionally executed was this performance, in the exact order of the studio album, that the crowd responded ovation after ovation. The set ended with a reprise of Round And Round with Cousins again nailing it with seemingly supernatural vocal power, and fans clamored for an encore while the pre-recorded Hero's Theme blared in the background. The Strawbs returned with the classic Lay Down and a heart-wrenching rendition of Where Silent Shadows Fall (aka The Valiant Soldier from the latest studio album Dancing with the Devil's Beat).

Kudos to the new old guys, John Young and Tony Fernandez, who were both rock solid. All in all, an extremely satisfying performance which left most fans giddy. Our sincere appreciation to the band for the monumental effort in putting together this show and performing it to perfection.

LINEUP CHANGE FOR THE 2010 TOUR
Neither Rod Coombes nor Oliver Wakeman are available for these tours - Rod has educational commitments, and Oliver is committed to recording a new Yes album in the States in October/November. But two renowned musicians have stepped in for the
Thursday, October 7 2010 show in Montreal as well as the other tour dates:

On drums... we welcome the return of a familiar face to many longtime Strawbs fans - TONY FERNANDEZ, who played on
Deadlines and Heartbreak Hill, the latter an album which Cousins considers one of their best. After 34 years in Rick Wakeman's band, Tony was reunited with the Heartbreak Hill and Blue Angel line-ups at the 40th anniversary weekend. His enthusiasm for playing Strawbs material again was both obvious and infectious. It'll be a great pleasure to see him behind the drumkit again. In addition to his work with the Strawbs and Rick Wakeman, Tony played drums with Ruthless Blues, Oliver and Adam Wakeman as well as on Clive Nolan's famed album Hound of the Baskervilles.

On keyboards... we welcome a new face - JOHN YOUNG, who has supported the Strawbs in the past at Bilston. As well as running his own John Young Band, he writes with Jon Anderson, is MD for Bonnie Tyler, has played in Quango alongside John Wetton and Carl Palmer and with Greenslade, Steeleye Span, Bon Jovi, The Scorpions, Asia, Paul Rodgers and Fish amongst other credits. Check out his Myspace page at: http://www.myspace.com/johnyoungband

with opening band Karcius!
Another great concert announcement from the FMPM team, and this time, an historical reunion of a legendary band of the '70s, FMPM and Get It Promotions are pleased to announce that Babe Ruth, the ‘70s British rock band hailing from Hatfield, England, has reunited and will be playing at the Metropolis (59 Ste. Catherine Street East • 514-844-3500) on Saturday July 10th, 2010.

And we just got word that Montreal prog-fusion band Karcius will ensure the opening act for the evening. Composed of Thomas Brodeur on drums, Simon L'Espérance on guitars, Mingan Sauriol on keys and Sylvain Auclair on bass and vocals, the group is just returning from a highly succesful tour in France and is currently working on their next album.

Babe Ruth includes all five original members: vocalist Janita (Jenny) Haan, guitarist Alan Shacklock, bassist Dave Hewitt, keyboardist Dave Punshon, and drummer Ed Spevok. "Since the release of our first album,
First Base, in 1972, Canada has always been Babe Ruth’s most enthusiastic fan base," says Alan Shacklock. "We're completely thrilled to be coming back out to play for everyone again. Our fondest memories as a band are the large arena concerts we played in cities like Montreal and Ottawa in 1974 and 1975."

First Base was certified Gold in Canada, and the band will be playing fan favorites such as Wells Fargo and the massive international hit The Mexican, as well as new material. “Songs from the new album Que Pasa such as Break for the Border and The Sun, Moon & Stars have that same progressive Latin-Mexican vibe” states Shacklock. “Singing is like breathing for me, I can’t live without it” says Jenny Haan. "We've all been doing our own separate projects over the years, but none of us has ever stopped playing. We are so charged to have the chance to do it as Babe Ruth once again... we are going to absolutely kill this!" For more info on the band please go to www.baberuthband.com.

Steve Hackett and his electric band
at the Place des Arts with special guest Renaissance!

FMPM and Get It Promotions are pleased to present a rare concert performance by STEVE HACKETT and his electric band,
Friday July 9 2010 at Théâtre Maisonneuve, Place des Arts (175 Sainte-Catherine Street West, Montréal) with special guest RENAISSANCE as the opening band (see text below). STEVE HACKETT is renowned as an immensely talented and innovative rock musician. He was lead guitarist with Genesis as part of their classic line up with Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford. Between 1970 and 1977, HACKETT played on 6 studio albums: Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, A Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering, as well as 2 live albums: Genesis Live and Seconds Out. His guitar playing produced some of the most memorable moments of that fabled line-up including dramatic electric guitar solos as in Firth of Fifth as well as sensitive acoustic passages as in Blood on the Rooftops. Steve's Electric band consists of Roger King on keyboards, Gary O'Toole on drums, Nick Beggs on bass, Rob Townsend on brass and woodwind and Amanda Lehmann on guitar and vocals.

Following GENESIS, HACKETT began an impressive solo career releasing several highly-rated progressive rock albums including
Voyage of the Acolyte and Spectral Mornings. He also formed super-group GTR with Steve Howe (Yes), and played with many renowned musicians such as Brian May (Queen), John Wetton (UK), and Ian Mosley and Pete Trewavas (Marillion). HACKETT also produced several award-winning classically-oriented albums featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra including A Midsummer’s Night Dream and Genesis Revisited.

HACKETT’s live electric concerts take fans on an extraordinary journey that covers many periods of his career from GENESIS and his early progressive solo work through to the present, woven together by his distinctive and melodic guitar playing. 2010 will cap HACKETT’s fourth decade as a professional musician and will also mark the year in which he and GENESIS are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

...but wait ! there's more...

Renaissance opening for Steve Hackett
on Friday, July 9 at la Place des Arts!
A very special treat for those who will be attending the Steve Hackett show, FMPM and Get It Promotions are proud to announce for the very first time in Montreal Renaissance as special guest to Steve Hackett on Friday, July 9, 2010 at Place des Arts' Théâtre Maisonneuve.

Renaissance's current resurgence coincides with the 40th anniversary of the classic English band's formation. 2009 saw singer Annie Haslam, whose five-octave voice is one of the most distinctive in rock history, reconnecting with longtime bandmate Michael Dunford, Renaissance's guitarist and principal composer. Haslam's soaring vocals and Dunford's evocative acoustic guitar work were cornerstones of the group's sound during its most prolific era, 1972-1978. So it's appropriate that the group launched its return to active duty with a series of intimate concerts in Fall 2009 for its loyal fans.

Renaissance's new lineup finds Haslam and Dunford joined by four world-class instrumentalists whose talents provide new creative blood, while maintaining the band's traditional standards of sterling musicianship. Keyboardist Rave Tesar and bassist/vocalist David J. Keyes are veterans of prior editions of Renaissance as well as several Haslam solo projects, while keyboardist/vocalist Tom Brislin's resume includes work with Yes, Camel, Debbie Harry, Meat Loaf and Francis Dunnery, and drummer Frank Pagano has collaborated with artists as diverse as Bruce Springsteen, Bette Midler, Barry Manilow and Smashing Pumpkins.

Now, Renaissance begins an exciting new chapter, while honoring its beloved body of vintage work. Haslam and Dunford promise that the new six-piece lineup will perform the band's timeless classics with the same care with which the material was originally crafted, while utilizing technological advances to reproduce the music's original symphonic textures like never before. They're also enthusiastic about introducing the music to a new generation of listeners as well as longtime fans.

"I'm thrilled to be performing these songs again, and to be performing them with Michael Dunford and a great group of musicians," Haslam states. "These songs are a big part of my life, so I'll be singing my heart out."

There are very few tickets still available, so act quickly before the show is sold out!

Is this going to be an amazing night of prog music or what ! ! !

The Incident. After the huge successes of the recent albums In Absentia, Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet, Porcupine Tree has been dominating the charts and gaining popularity worldwide. The band is composed of Steven Wilson on vocals and guitars, Richard Barbieri on keyboards, Colin Edwin on bass, Gavin Harrison on drums and touring member John Wesley on guitars. The group will also be in Quebec City on Thursday, May 6 2010 at the Capitole de Québec.

Speaking of Porcupine Tree, Rush’s Neil Peart has been musing on music and PT. “I went to see a band called Porcupine Tree not long ago. And I was talking with (singer-guitarist) Steven Wilson. They just put out a 55-minute piece. That's a finger to the whole iTunes shuffle thing, and he intended it as such. And I thought, 'Yeah, that's another way of rebelling against it – by just saying no.' There's too much lost in giving up the integrity of an album – what it represents to you as a musician, and as a human being, for that matter. So I like that approach.” You can read the whole interview here.

Proggy tidbits!
Here are some of the latest headlines in the wonderful world of progressive music:

Dan Fry leaves Magenta
Just announced a few days ago, Magenta's energetic bass player Daniel Fry has decided to leave the band. He will play one last gig with the group on March 13th at the Winters End Festival. Band leader Rob Reed commented:

"Dan has been a fantastic servant to Magenta during his 4 1/2 year tenure with the band. Both his playing skill and his onstage enthusiasm have, quite rightly, made him a favourite with the fans and have helped build Magenta’s considerable reputation as a live act. However, Dan now wants time to pursue his own musical projects outside of Prog and we respect that. While his departure is a huge disappointment to us all, he remains a great friend to the band and we can’t thank him enough for his remarkable contribution. He certainly will be a hard act to follow. We are currently holding auditions for Dan’s replacement so if you’d like to throw you hat into the ring (so to speak) we’d love to hear from you!"- Rob Reed

The group will be on hiatus until they find a new bass player and go back to the studios for a new album so it may be a while before we see Magenta live again...

Agents of Mercy: A new album in the works
Roine Stolt has announced on MySpace that the members of Agents Of Mercy are presently working hard at writing and finding the right songs for their next album. Currently the band have worked on 25 songs to choose from although more could be added when they reach the studio.

Varispeed Studios in Klagerup near Malmo have been booked by the band for the beginning of March, the same location where The Flower Kings album Sum Of No Evil was recorded. This is a departure from the first AoM album The Fading Ghosts Of Twilight which was individually recorded in various locations in the USA and Sweden before being mixed. The Varispeed recording sessions are going to be filmed in Technicolor 3D according to Stolt. Core group members Roine Stolt and Nad Sylvan will be joined by Jonas Reingold (bass), Lalle Larsson (keyboards) and Michael Wahlgren (drums) for the the recording of the album.

Proggy tidbits!
Here are some of the latest headlines in the wonderful world of progressive music:

ECHOLYN: THE LATEST NEWS!
And here are the latest news from our good friend Brett Kull on what has been happening lately in the Echolyn world...

"We just got back together this weekend for some more writing and recording. We took off this fall because of various touring, teaching, etc... so it was nice to get together again.

This past Saturday we worked all day and night. We recorded the basic tracks for two songs: Moments with no sound and Hey head right. On Sunday we added some more textures. I like the fact that we are playing live in the room and capturing that energy. we are also tracking without a click track to let the songs breathe a bit more. It makes the music more natural and free. We have a mission to regularly get together and work on the new material this year. more to come!"
Brett Kull

Looking forward to some new music from the guys!

PALLAS "SACKS" SINGER ALAN REED
Some sad and surprising news from the scottish band Pallas, as long-time lead singer Alan Reed was fired from the band. This comment was taken from Alan Reed's FaceBook page:
"It is with great regret that I must tell you that I am no longer a member of Pallas.

This is not a situation of my desire or choosing. I have been unceremoniously informed that the other members of the band have unanimously decided to sack me. This has happened without prior warning or discussion.

The purported reason is an alleged lack of commitment on my part to the band and the forthcoming album. My external activities with other projects is cited in support of this.

I can only express my sadness that I will no longer be part of the Pallas story. The new album was/is shaping up to be a good one, and I was looking forward to participating fully in it.

I take extreme exception to the suggestion that I was not committed to the band. As I'm sure anyone who knows me will testify, I've been passionate about Pallas since I first joined 25 years ago. I've also been very active in the organisation of the band on many levels.

I can't begin to say how angry and hurt I feel at the way this has been done. We've all been through a lot together over the years, and I've always considered every member of the band and crew a close personal friend. I'd like to say that I wish Graeme, Niall, Ronnie and Colin the best of luck without me - but as you will understand, such Machiavellian treatment leaves a bitter taste. However, I am not and never have been vengeful, and perhaps in the fullness of time we'll speak again.. But this is a betrayal that is not easily forgiven.

As for my own future, it's too early to say. I had not anticipated this, and was expecting a full programme of Pallas-related activity over the next year. Whatever my next move is, it's likely to sound very different. I hope you will continue to offer me the same support and friendship that I have enjoyed up until now. "
Alan Reed

Here is Graeme Murray response to Alan's comment:
"Playing in a band is like being in a marriage, only there are five partners instead of two. It is complicated. No one goes into a marriage expecting to get divorced. Alan has been a member of Pallas for many years, but the sad inescapable truth is that Alan, and the other members of the band have slowly drifted apart over the last couple of years.

No one set out with the intention that this should happen. It just has. It is partly due to the geographical problems of living at opposite ends of the UK. Alan has been unable to attend a Pallas rehearsal in the last five years, and writing music together when you are 500 miles apart is difficult. Sometimes people just grow apart as their ideas and interests change.

During the last set of UK gigs Alan did not travel with the rest of the band members and barely spoke to any of the rest of the band during the two days we were together. There was no discussion about the new album, no laughs with the rest of us. It was all very uncomfortable. None of us have had any communication from Alan since the Peel. At a time when we are starting to record a new album that seemed very odd.

Yesterday was a very sad day for me. It fell on me on behalf of the rest of the band to tell Alan that we wanted a divorce. Nothing Machiavellian, nothing gutless, nothing underhand, nothing vindictive. There is no good time to tell someone something like this. There is no good way to tell someone something like this. We are all very sad, and I, and the guys, knew how hurt Alan would be, understandably, but the fact is the relationship had broken down, to a point where we wanted a divorce.

The reason we play in Pallas is for the enjoyment and for the love of the music. If we are not enjoying it then there is no point and the band would simply die, like a loveless marriage. We were not enjoying the fact that the relationship had broken down. I don't propose to discuss the breakdown its not appropriate, it just happened. It's sad.

Pallas will continue. We continue to work on XXV, and it will come out later this year. We will be touring, We will be playing at Progeny, We look forward to seeing you all and hopefully to your ongoing support.

We wish Alan well. There is no ill will on our part and we are sure that Alan will be fronting another band before long, and we look forward to that. We would like to remain friends.

I had asked Alan to call me today after our call yesterday. He was very angry on the phone and I totally understand that. I had hoped that I could talk to him today and explain some of these things to him personally before any announcement was made about the situation.

Unfortunately, I am having to say them publicly. I hope this helps balance the equation and that it may give an insight into the other side of this unhappy story. On behalf of the members of Pallas."
Graeme Murray

Later, Alan shared an exchange with another Pallas bandmate who felt he deserved a more detailed explanation of his termination:

"A discussion took place some months ago, where personal views and opinions were put forward. At this meeting, the idea of what the band might sound like with a new voice, and look like with a new front was put forward - and it was met with a long silence - but not opposition. It was like a fire had been lit that couldn't be contained. We know lots of good local singers, largely due to the existence of the two studios - and there's one guy that stands out from the rest. He has a different voice, different stage personna - different not necessarily better - and it turns out he's up for it. All I know is there's a buzz. We've been working round the clock at the Mill all of January in anticipation of the new sound - and we're all excited, first time for as far back as I can remember.

And that's the central point that there's no way back from - we all want to take the hugely radical step of changing the public interface - in many respects, simply to see what happens. I can't even begin to imagine what you're feeing right now - but for the rest of us, it's either this very radical step or no band at all."

This sounds a bit like a soap! More Pallas news as they happen!

The Residents at Club Soda
Amercian avant-garde band The Residents will be at the Club Soda (1225 boul. Saint-Laurent, Montreal • 514-286-1010) on Friday, February 12 2010, at 9:00 PM.

Renowned for their outrageous costumes, The Residents is an American avant-garde music and visual arts group who have been active since 1969. Their first official release under the name of
The Residents was in 1972, and since then the band have gone on to release over sixty albums, numerous music videos and short films, three CD-ROM projects, ten DVDs, and have undertaken seven major world tours. Throughout the group's existence, the individual members have ostensibly attempted to conceal their identities from the public, and much public speculation and rumor has focused on this aspect of the group. In public, the group appears silent and costumed, often wearing eyeball helmets, top hats and tuxedos - a long-lasting costume now recognized as their signature iconography. Their albums are often complex conceptual pieces, composed around a theme, theory or plot, and are noted for surrealistic lyrics and disregard for standard Western pop music composition.

Tickets for the show are $25.50 and $28.50, available through TicketPro.

Epica at the Club Soda
Acclaimed dutch symphonic metal band Epica will be at the Club Soda (1225 boul. Saint-Laurent, Montreal • 514-286-1010) on Sunday, January 31 2010, at 8:00 PM, accompanied by Threat Signal and Blackguard.

Epica's music is a blend of progressive metal, gothic metal and symphonic metal. Another component of Epica's style is power metal with their guitarist Ad Sluijter describing the band as "a bridge between power metal and gothic metal." Vocalist Simone Simons has expressed a preference for the group to be described as symphonic metal though the founder of the group Mark Jansen notes that they do not mind being called gothic metal.

The music of Epica is aggressive, bombastic and excessive with some songs being epic, grand and majestic and others more subdued and introspective. The band is also known to have strong progressive tendencies while a gothic atmosphere and sentimentality is also present in their music.

Tickets are $22.59/$27.64, plus taxes, available through Ticketpro and at the Club Soda boxoffice.

Present -
Barbaro (ma non troppo):
The latest release from Belgian avant garde/RIO legends Present is entitled
Barbaro (ma non troppo) and features a CD with 45 minutes of mesmerizing, dark music, along with a DVD of nearly 3 hours of live concerts, notably from the 2007 "Rock In Opposition" event in France and their performance in Gouveia, Portugal in 2006. The album is available from Ad Hoc Records at http://www.adhocrecords.com/

Izz -
The Darkened Room:
The progressive community is buzzing with anticipation of the upcoming release by New York prog ensemble Izz. In the past decade the group has released several highly acclaimed albums and have accumulated a large dedicated following in the process. The band's newest CD
The Darkened Room, an epic concept album, is scheduled for release on November 17th and is part of an ongoing series. "This is sort of a 'Part One' of a two-part album series," says John Galgano, who plays bass with the band. "We have already started recording on the next part." The album will be available at all good record stores in early November, as well as through Play.com and Amazon.

The Future Kings Of England -
The Viewing Point:
The latest CD from psychedelic/space rock UK band The Future Kings Of England has been featured on many top ten list recently! Described by Rolling Stone as "...the pastoral Floyd, ’72 Genesis, the echosoup psychedelia of Amon Düül II – whipped together with an ardor that sounds like yesterday and tomorrow at once.",
The Viewing Point will surely captivate your interest! The new album is available from Backwater Records, eMusic and Amazon.

Hamadryad -
Intrusion:
Over two years in the works, this highly anticipated album will feature the two latest additions to the Hamadryad lineup, singer Jean-Philippe Major and drummer Nicolas Turcotte. The recording is completed and the last few touches are made to the mastering,

Korpiklaani at the Club Soda
Finnish folk metal band Korpiklaani will be at the Club Soda (1225 boul. Saint-Laurent, Montreal • 514-286-1010) on Saturday, January 9 2010, at 7:30 PM, accompanied by TYR, Swashbuckle and White Wizzard.

Korpiklaani is a folk metal band from Finland who were formerly known as Shaman. The name Korpiklaani means "Forest Clan" in the Finnish language. While other folk metal bands began with metal before adding folk music, Korpiklaani started with folk music before turning metal. Two albums were released in 1999 and 2001 before Shaman changed their name to Korpiklaani. The change in name was accompanied by a change in the music. The traditional yoik vocals and the use of the Sámi language were dropped while the synthesizer was replaced with real folk instruments. Jonne Järvelä credits his work with Finntroll as the catalyst for the shift in emphasis from folk to metal. Korpiklaani released a sixth studio album in summer 2009, titled
Karkelo.

Tickets are $30/$33, plus taxes, available through Ticketpro and at the Club Soda boxoffice.

Heavy Mtl Xmas with Voivod!
Legendary Montreal heavy metal band Voivod will be at the Club Soda (1225 boul. Saint-Laurent, Montreal • 514-286-1010) this Saturday, December 12 2009, at 8:00 PM, accompanied by Les Ékorchés.

HEAVY MTL is thrilled to announce its first event since the tremendously successful inaugural edition of the festival in 2008! Back and getting ready to bring fans a bigger and louder festival than ever in 2010, HEAVY MTL will be presenting several club-based shows over the coming months in anticipation for its return.

To kick off the countdown to the much awaited arrival of HEAVY MTL 2010, they will be presenting HEAVY MTL XMAS with metal pioneers and Quebec favourites Voivod at the Club Soda. The band that rocked the first edition of the festival needs little introduction – their long running career of pushing metal into uncharted ground has spawned twelve studio albums. HEAVY MTL 2008 was a landmark show for Voivod, marking their first show since the passing of Denis “Piggy” D’Amour and the return of their original bass player Blacky, who had not performed with band in 17 years.

Voivod’s latest album
Infini was released in June 2009 and features Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bass player Jason Newsted (Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne). The album has garnered many excellent reviews with AllMusic.com having said “If Infini turns out to be the final Voivod album, then the group has gone out on a high note”.

In order to contribute to this special “metal holiday” event, fans are encouraged to bring a can of food to the show. The food gathered will be donated to a local food bank.

Montreal based act Les Ékorchés, who launched their second album
Quatre Démons earlier in 2009, will open the show.

Tickets are $15/$20, plus taxes, available through Ticketpro and at the Club Soda boxoffice.
