New music
Cool new music from all around the world, here are some recent (and future) releases of interest:

Alan Reed -
Dancing With Ghosts:
Alan Reed, ex-lead singer of Pallas, is about to release his first venture as a solo artist. Entitled
Dancing with Ghosts, this EP includes acoustic arrangements of songs covering both his past and present. There are a couple of Pallas songs, an Abel Ganz track, and two new compositions which will turn up in quite different form on his forthcoming full-lenght solo album. Beautiful acoustic guitar and piano arrangements combined with Alan's elegant songwriting makes for a captivating first solo work, and features Mark Spencer on keyboards and sitar, Jennifer Clark on double bass and acoustic bass guitar, and Scott Higham on percussion. The EP (which costs £5.00) will be out on November 7th from www.themerchdesk.com as well as the usual specialist retailers and on-line providers.

Glass Hammer -
Cor Gordium:
Cor Cordium is Glass Hammer’s 2011 follow-up to last year's highly acclaimed IF, an album which found its place in numerous Top 10 and Best of 2010 lists throughout the prog world. To keep the momentum going from last year’s success, singer Jon Davison and guitarist Alan Shikoh return with Glass Hammer co-founders Steve Babb and Fred Schendel to create the band’s fourteenth studio album.

“We never set out to make
IF Volume 2,” reveals Babb. “But we are definitely heading in the same direction musically. Fans that loved IF are going to be equally excited about Cor Cordium."

Featuring six tracks, including the highly addictive Salvation Station, the epic-length To Someone and the climactic She, A Lonely Tower; art work and a 16 page full-color layout by artist Tom Kuhn and audiophile mastering by Bob Katz of Digital Domain. The lineup includes Fred Schendel on keyboards, steel guitar, backing vocals, Steve Babb on bass guitar, keyboards, backing vocals, Jon Davison on lead vocals, acoustic guitars and Alan Shikoh on guitars (electric and acoustic) and sitar. The album will be avaliable through Glass Hammer's online store.

Transatlantic -
More Never Is Enough:
A brand new offering from prog supergroup Transatlantic, this mind-blowing box set of 3 CDs and two DVDs will be available on October 25 and will feature live music captured during their 2010 European tour. This release will include the 3+ hour Tilburg show on 2 DVD's (with the Return of the Giant Hogweed encore) and the audio from the entire Manchester show on 3 CD's.
More Never Is Enough will be available directly from Radiant Record.

ExCubus -
LaGauchetière:
The second release of 1970's era compositions from Incubus, one of Québec's earliest prog groups who recently changed name to ExCubus.
Lagauchetière shows ExCubus broadening their compositional palette and sound since the release of Mémoires incubussiennes in 2008. While the album includes compositions dating back to the group's first lineup, it also showcases pieces written by band members during their participation in subsequent progressive bands such as Coenobium, Igor and Polygone. The sound of the band is edgier and more energetic, while retaining the harmonies and melodies introduced with their first effort. The result is an excellent album of broader compositional styles melding into a cohesive whole and proof demonstrating these musicians' continued evolution on Québec's progressive scene. Available through ProgQuébec's online store, as well as all good local record stores including Archambault and Freeson!

To keep bringing you the finest Prog Rock, we’ve brought on board the amazing vocalist/guitarist Ted Leonard (Enchant, Thought Chamber) and Jimmy Keegan (Santana, John Waite), who’s been our tour drummer for close to 10 years now. Nick D'Virgilio leaves Spock's Beard
It is with much sadness that I learned of this news, but as they say, all god things must come to an end. Here's the official news release from Nick D'Virgilio:

"The time has come.

It is very hard for me to write this, but as all good things come to an end at sometime or another, unfortunately I have to tell you all that my time with Spock’s Beard has come to a close.

As you may or may not know, for almost 2 years now I have been working for Cirque Du Soleil on the touring show TOTEM. Traveling a bit of the globe with my family on an adventure that has been great, but also very tough. Great because I am finally able to fully support my family with this very unstable life I chose as a musician, but also very tough because this job has made it hard to do other things and the main thing is Spock’s Beard.

For the first time in 20 years I had to miss shows when the band played a few festivals this past summer. Needless to say it was very, very strange not being there. I have been trying to land a permanent resident show for next year which would leave me a little more time to tour with Spock’s Beard but that has not happened yet and I don’t know when exactly that will happen. I recently signed for another year with Cirque because I cannot just get up and quit until something else can takes its place. I am sure you all understand that I have to take care of my main responsibility and that is my family. Spock’s Beard has never been the main money maker for me, or any of the other guys in the band. We have always had to do other things to supplement our incomes and for me now the other thing just happens to be Cirque.

The Spock’s guys want to keep moving forward and it is just Murphy’s Law for Spock’s Beard that everyone else is totally available to tour at the moment and I am not. For many years, I was available for anything but we couldn’t tour as much as we wanted because of other schedules. Now with my job it doesn’t look like I am going to be available anytime soon. I totally understand where the guys are coming from, wanting to tour and make new albums and I have too much respect for them and Spock’s Beard to say that they cannot keep going without me. The guys are eager to keep the ball rolling, and as hard as that is to imagine without me I give them my blessing fully and wish them nothing but the best in whatever they do.

I have had the best time and have made some of the best music of my career with Dave, Al, Ryo, and Neal and will take those memories with me for the rest of my life.

This is not to say that I will never play with the guys again. If all of the stars align in future and I can do something I surely will but for now the guys will be going on without me and I humbly ask all of you Spock’s Beard fans that have been nothing short of amazing, to keep the flame burning for them.

SO for my future, even with the crazy schedule of my Cirque job I have still been able to release a new solo EP “
PIECES” recently and even did some solo shows. Those things are easier for me to do because I can do those within the areas that I am living at the time and I am planning on many more solo gigs in the future so keep an eye and ear out for those announcements. I will be going back to London at the beginning of 2012 with Cirque and during that time I will be able to get back down to Rob Aubrey’s studio to do some more sessions with the great BIG BIG TRAIN and even try and finish a project that got started a number of years ago now called “PULSE” with Mike Holmes of IQ fame. I am also writing a lot for more solo music of my own.

Thank you to my family. Your support has been my rock for many years now, I know that will always be there and I am so thankful for that.

Thank you to all of the great guys who have crewed for Spock’s Beard over the years and have gone way beyond the call of duty to get us on and off stage. Especially Rob, Olly, and Tommy. I will for sure miss touring with you guys.

Thank you to the promoters and venues that have opened up their stages to us.

Thank you Jimmy Keegan for holding down the fort while I was up front and kickin ass for Spock’s Beard over the years.

Thank you to all of my amazing endorsement companies.

In closing, THANK YOU to all of the Spock’s Beard fans out there who have given us so much amazing and heart felt support over the years. We could not have done it without you all. It has been an amazing journey for me and I will never ever forget the great times we have shared together.

It’s time for a change."

Animals by Pink Floyd in its entirety as their end-of-session project. The chemistry was immediately evident since all the members were avid Pink Floyd fans. Roger Hodgson, the man who wrote and sang the enduring rock standards that made Supertramp famous (The Logical Song, Breakfast in America, Give a Little Bit, Take the Long Way Home. New ProgQuébec releases
Lots of new material coming on the ProgQuébec record label, including a new complete reissue of Offenbach's Tabarnak as well as exclusive distribution of many of André Duchesne's excrellent solo albums.

André Duchesne -
Le Temps des Bombes:
First released on vinyl in 1984,
Le Temps des Bombes was André Duchesne's first solo album post-Conventum, and was reissued on CD in 1996. A cult album featuring former band-mates Rene Lussier on guitar and Bernard Cormier on violin as well as a host of other musicians, the music very much embodies the feel of his folk and chamber ensemble Conventum. The eight songs up to six-minutes in length are progressive avant-folk rock numbers with a solid rhythm section, warped electric guitar lines, and irregular time signatures with lyrics full of plays on words. Le Temps des Bombes contains the strange beauty of Conventum's melodies plus a new angular rock sound that would become the basis of Duchesne's future projects. Highly recommended for Conventum fans ! Coming soon through ProgQuébec.

André Duchesne -
Locomotive:
Released in 1993,
Locomotive is the pinnacle of André Duchesne's discography. Featuring three guitarists (Duchesne, Claude Fradette and Francis Grandmont) plus drums, the album`s contrapuntal riffs are intertwined over avant-prog rhythmic patterns delivered by Miriodor drummer Rémi Leclerc. The music races at the speed of a locomotive, one track after another of rock songs influenced by the likes of Robert Fripp and delivered with surgical precision. Six of the 13 tracks have vocals, and range from the frenetic to emotional ballads. Very strongly recommended for fans of Conventum, Miriodor and any avant-prog music, Locomotive is one of the best rock album ever from Quebec! Coming soon through ProgQuébec.

André Duchesne -
World Tour 1998, Les 4 Guitaristes de l'Apocalypso Bar:
Les 4 Guitaristes de l'Apocalypso-Bar was an electric guitar quartet (plus drums), featuring André Duchesne, René Lussier and Jean-Pierre Bouchard, all three members of Conventum, plus Roger Boudreault. The band received international attention thanks to the presence of ex-Henry Cow drummer Chris Cutler. Two albums were released: Tournée Mondiale/Été '89 in 1987 and Fin de Siècle in 1989 which were reissued on CD in 1995 under the title World Tour 1998 (the dates are willingly misleading as this was a band from the future). Claude Fradette and young Miriodor drummer Rémi Leclerc also appear on the second album. The music is a series of contrapuntal avant-prog pieces for guitar quartet, containing a cross between Robert Fripp's circular motifs and Fred Frith's angular playing. Recommended for fans of Conventum, Miriodor, Henry Cow, Robert Fripp, Fred Frith, Lars Hollmer and the likes. Coming soon through ProgQuébec.

Offenbach -
Tabarnak:
Offenbach's long anticipated album is now finally available on CD, in full, for the first time ever! Recorded in 1974 while the band toured France and Holland, the original double album heralds a group who unleashes their musical thunder onstage. Original versions of classics such as Promenade sur Mars, Québec Rock, Ma Patrie est à terre, Habitant d'chien blanc, and Hymne à l'amour (the last one being completely different from later live versions), rock alongside inspired jams and some of the band's most progressive tracks ever, such as Éther, Maryline, and Quoi quoi. And as an added bonus, we're treated to over 30 minutes of unreleased live recordings from the same tour, including versions of Moody Calvaire Moody and Rirolarma. Celebrate the release of the film Gerry with your copy of the album which firmly planted the band on the map! A double CD release with over 120 minutes of music in total. Available right now through ProgQuébec as well as all good record stores.

Mikey Heppner does Zappa and Mahogany Frog
at PopMontréal Festival
Mikey Heppner, lead guitarist of Priestess) will be part of the PopMontreal Festival lineup and will play on Friday, September 23 2011 at Cinéma L'Amour (4015 St-Laurent, Montreal), paying tribute to Frank Zappa. Mikey will be accompanied by none other than Winnipeg's formidable avant prog quartet Mahogany Frog for one hell of a double bill!

Here's Mikey describing the show: "I am a total Zappa freak and have been one since I was in high school. After cutting my teeth at home recording with the Uncle Bad Touch record (and a few other local bands), I took some spare time to start self recording Zappa covers for fun and to share with my friends. It quickly became an album's worth of songs, so I made the decision to compile them and throw a release party, and perform them with a band. I couldn't imagine a better excuse for this type of show to take place than under the Pop Montreal banner, my newly formed Zappa cover band and I couldn't be more excited for it! This just might be a one shot deal folks, so if you like Zappa or are just curious to see how a bunch of local goofs are gonna pull this off, you gotta come check it out! Opening the night are Mahogany Frog from Winnipeg, and they're going to prog-rock your faces off. Hope to see you there."
Mikey Heppner

The show will begin at 11 PM and tickets are $12 ($15 on the day of the show) available through the PopMontréal website.

Fly From Here:
One of the most influential and ground-breaking progressive bands in, legendary rockers and Grammy Award winners Yes, will release their first studio album in a decade,
Fly From Here, on July 12th in North America through Frontiers Records. Their long awaited 20th studio album is the follow up to 2001’s Magnification and marks the band’s return with producer, Trevor Horn, who produced the band’s chart topping album, 90125, in 1983 and also sang for Yes on the Drama album in 1980. Yes is Benoit David on vocals (his first studio recording with Yes), Steve Howe on guitars/vocals, founder Chris Squire on bass/vocals, Geoff Downes on keyboards and Alan White on drums. Roger Dean, creator of a number of Yes’ most memorable album covers, also returns with his signature style for Fly From Here.

All of the songs on Fly From Here embody that classic and now iconic Yes sound and style. The first single, We Can Fly, (to be released digitally on June 13th) is borne from a piece of music that was written prior to the Fly writing sessions – an idea that has now grown into an overture and 5 subsequent movements that feature the unparalleled musicianship and virtuoso talents that are synonymous with Yes.

First formed in 1968, Yes’ remarkable career spans over 40 years and the band has time and again redefined the boundaries of rock music. Yes has sold nearly 50 million albums worldwide and continues to stretch the boundaries of progressive art-rock with their symphonic use of sound and innovative musical styles. SLP -
Perception:
After their phenomenal performance at the Terra Incognita Convention this May, Unicorn Digital presents SLP. Sébastien Lépine has established a solid reputation in the realm of classical music, yet he is also a highly versatile artist, a musical renaissance man who never hesitates to venture out on the uncertain path of experimentation. SLP (for Sébastien Lépine Project) finds the cellist temporarily swapping his precious Stradivarius for an electric cello, backed by the stalwart musicianship of guitarist Martin Carbonneau, bassist Ian Peterson, and drummer Denis Marchand. Within this electric chamber ensemble, if one may so call it, he delivers his own jazz-infused progressive rock compositions, creating an eclectic, yet attractive amalgamation of sounds.

Inspired by the likes of King Crimson, Pat Metheny, and Gentle Giant, the former pupil of cello master Janos Starker explores the many facets of the electric cello through remarkably well-written works that brilliantly showcase the spectacular instrument. Featuring electric guitar, electric bass, and drums, the performance is as surprising as it is uniquely innovative.

The album is available at all good record stores, including Archambault.ca and through Unicorn Digital.

Following their highly acclaimed performance at RoSFest 2011, 10T Records is thrilled to announce the pending release of the new full length CD by Mars Hollow, entitled World in front of Me, on June 21, 2011.  It’s been less than one year since Mars Hollow’s highly acclaimed self-titled debut took the progressive rock world by storm. Fans of uncompromising progressive rock are sure to find much to enjoy as the band continues defining their unique musical trajectory.

John Jowitt rejoins Arena
Following John Jowitt's departure from IQ a few months ago, it was obvious that the energetic bassist who had also left Jadis and Frost* a while ago couldn't stay idle for very long. Here's John's posting about his reunion with Arena on his Facebook page:

"For those that don't know, following the departure of Ian Salmon I've been asked to join Arena (once more), and have agreed. Best of luck to Ian (best fretless bass sound going!).

First gig in June, and I will be appearing on the new album - and have been asked to put forward some song ideas.

Right, I'm looking forward to taking care ..." - John Jowitt, April 7, 2011

Featuring bassist/vocalist John Wetton (UK and King Crimson), drummer Carl Palmer (ELP), guitarist Steve Howe (YES), and keyboardist Geoff Downes (Buggles)

Top 10 singles like Heat Of The Moment, Only Time Will Tell, Sole Survivor and Time Again, resulted in sales exceeding 7 million copies.

After multiple line-up changes, the stars aligned in early 2006 with all four original members of ASIA reuniting for a world tour to celebrate the group’s 25th anniversary. "This is the real ASIA," says guitarist Steve Howe. "There have been other versions of the band, but this original line-up is the one that the public truly embraced. Since we only toured for a couple of years, it will be nice, finally, to play for audiences all over the world, many of whom never had a chance to see the group in concert."

Proggy tidbits!
Here are some of the latest headlines in the wonderful world of progressive music:

New Yes album Fly From Here out this July
Wakeman out, Buggles in.

Quintessential prog-rockers Yes have announced that they have reunited with legendary producer Trevor Horn for their highly anticipated new album, Fly From Here. The album marks the band's first studio album in ten years.

The album originated from a conversation between Horn and Yes bassist Chris Squire, who re-discovered the song Fly From Here and realized that it had never been recorded in a studio. "Chris and I were talking one evening about the song Fly From Here that we never recorded," explains Horn. "I said I was prepared to spend two weeks with Yes recording that song. When I arrived in America to record it, I was taken prisoner by the band and only allowed my freedom again in return for producing the whole album. It was an offer I couldn't refuse!"

Fly From Here retains Yes' signature brand of mysticism and large-scale compositions. The record contains plenty of the complex arrangements, beautiful harmonies, and heavy riffs the band is known for. "The new album represents the best of Yes from the '70s and the '80s with a current twist," said Squire.

Keyboardist Geoff Downes, who originally joined the band for 1980's
Drama, has also re-joined the band for the new album. Yes now consists of guitarist Steve Howe, bassist Chris Squire, drummer Alan White, keyboardist Downes, and lead singer Benoit David.

With total sales of over 30 million albums, Yes are widely considered to be the pioneers of the prog-rock movement. The group is also known for radio classics such as Roundabout, a seminal hit that consistently appears on 'the best songs of all time' lists, and the Horn-produced hit Owner of a Lonely Heart. The latter song reached the top of both the UK and US singles charts simultaneously.

Fly From Here will be released on Frontiers Records in July 2011. Source: Heavy Rock-The Playlist, March 31, 2011

Renowned for their outrageous costumes, The Residents is an American avant-garde music and visual arts group who have been active since 1969. Their first official release under the name of
The Residents was in 1972, and since then the band have gone on to release over sixty albums, numerous music videos and short films, three CD-ROM projects, ten DVDs, and have undertaken seven major world tours. Throughout the group's existence, the individual members have ostensibly attempted to conceal their identities from the public, and much public speculation and rumor has focused on this aspect of the group. In public, the group appears silent and costumed, often wearing eyeball helmets, top hats and tuxedos - a long-lasting costume now recognized as their signature iconography. Proggy tidbits!
Here are some of the latest headlines in the wonderful world of progressive music:

Major changes with the band IQ, it is with much sadness that long-time member and bassist extraordinaire John Jowitt announced his departure from the band. John says: "I'm very sad to say that although playing with IQ has been a dream come true, after 19 years with the band I love, last month's Christmas gig at the O2 was my last show with IQ, and I'm leaving the band. I've had a great time, met lots of wonderful people, travelled the world, but it's time to move on. I'd like to confirm that this is my decision, and also that it has no relationship to me playing with any other band.

I'd like to wish all the best to IQ, for what I'm sure will continue to be a great future; I'd like to thank the crew and past band members for all their help, camaraderie and hard work, and most of all, I'd like to thank everyone who's come along to the shows over the years and supported us."

Following this announcement, The group announced the return to IQ of Tim Esau. As you will know, Tim was the original bassist with the band from 1981 to 1989 and the group is thrilled to be able to welcome him back to the IQ family in time for their 30th anniversary year.

Here are some words from Tim himself:

"Well, I'll start by adding my best wishes to John for his future. I've only met him a couple of times myself but I know he is a great entertainer and was hugely popular with the IQ faithful.

So, following John's departure and having recovered from the initial shock of receiving a most unexpected email, I am extremely grateful to Pete, Mike and Cookie for thinking of me and inviting me back to play bass for IQ and I'm very happy to accept that invitation. I look forward very much to working with them again, meeting and working with Neil, seeing many faces that I haven't seen in many a year and, of course, meeting lots of new ones. I can't believe it's 30 years since I first joined IQ but I guess I've had a nice long rest so I'm ready to do some work and get on with the celebrating of this 'quite remarkable' anniversary.

"Rest assured we have no plans for further line-up changes in the near future! We look forward to seeing you all on this year's exciting IQ30 tour"
. Recent changes in the IQ lineup also included the return of Paul "Cookie" Cook on drums and the addition of new keyboardist Neil Durant.

A band with an unusual line-up Guido Del Fabbro (violin and electronics), Simon Lapointe (keyboards), Antonin Provost (guitars) and Nemo Venba (trumpet and drums), Rouge Ciel offers a music turned towards the pleasure of creation without constraints. The album is available at ActuelleCD and at all good record stores!
