The Australian Pink Floyd Show will be back in Montreal with their brand new Exposed to the Light World Tour on Friday November 2, 2012 at the Bell Center at 8:00 PM.

Described in 2011 by The Times in London as “Setting the gold standard”, The Australian Pink Floyd Show is a live touring sensation which has now sold over three million tickets worldwide, and the band have created an incredible show for the “Exposed In The Light” 2012 dates. Taking its title from the lyrics of the Floyd classic Shine On You Crazy Diamond, the 2012 “Exposed In The Light” tour will be a true Pink Floyd ‘immersion’, bolstered by new lasers, new lights and even more jaw-dropping video effects. The 2012 tour is going to be a truly multi-media sensory experience. Emerging back in 1988, the original and credible Floyd act The Australian Pink Floyd Show has been getting bigger and better ever since. Alongside the release of the powerful new single Headlong Flight, Rush will embark on a North American Tour in support of their upcoming and highly anticipated new album,
Clockwork Angels. This year’s fall tour will visit approximately 33 cities beginning September 7th in Manchester, NH, and finishing December 2nd in Houston, TX.

Clockwork Angels the band’s 20th studio album, will be released on June 12th. This is the renowned trio’s first new collection of original material in over five years and their first studio release via Anthem/Roadrunner records. With more than 40 million records sold worldwide and countless sold-out tours, Rush – Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart – is not only one of the most inventive and compelling groups in rock history, but remains one of the most relevant.

Singer/bassist Geddy Lee remarked, “Headlong Flight was one of those songs that was a joy to write and record from beginning to end. Alex [Lifeson] and I had blast jamming in my home studio one day before the 2nd leg of the Time Machine Tour and I did not revisit that jam until a year later. Alex and I assembled the song to be an instrumental and it's original title was "Take that lampshade off yo head!" but once we saw the lyrics Neil had written for Headlong Flight, I knew that the spirit of the lyrics matched the instrumental perfectly and it was just a matter of making them fit and writing the melodies.”

Drummer and lyricist Neil Peart explained, “In late 2011, my drum teacher Freddie Gruber, towards the end of his long and adventurous 84 years, was reminiscing among friends and former students. Often he would shake his head and say, "I had quite a ride. I wish I could do it all again." That is not a feeling I have ever shared about the past -- I remain glad that I don't have to do it all again. While working on the lyrics for Headlong Flight, the last song written for
Clockwork Angels, I tried to summarize my character's life and adventures. My own ambivalence colored the verses, while Freddie's words inspired the chorus ‘I wish that I could live it all again.”

The RIAA has certified Rush for the third most consecutive gold/platinum studio albums by a rock band, topped only by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Rush’s vast catalog includes such classics as 1974’s self-titled debut, 1976’s
2112, 1981’s Moving Pictures, 1996’s Test for echo, and 2002’s Vapor Trails. Rush’s most recent studio album, 2007’s Snakes and Arrows, debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200, marking the band’s highest chart debut since 1993, as well as their eleventh top 10 album in the U.S. The album’s first single, Far Cry, hit the top 5 at mainstream rock radio, with airplay on over 100 radio stations in the US. Additionally, the Snakes and Arrows track Malignant Narcissism was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rock Instrumental Performance category.

In addition to their commercial success, Rush has also been recognized with a number of Juno Awards and multiple Grammy nominations, including one for the acclaimed documentary “Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage” at this year’s gala event. Enjoying a recent pop culture renaissance, Rush made a rare television appearance - their first in over 30 years - on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” and a memorable cameo in the film “I Love You, Man.” A career-chronicling Rolling Stone feature summed up the renowned rock trio’s continuing artistic vitality by observing, “It’s true that Rush doesn’t mean today what it did in ’76 or even ’96. It may mean more.

Featuring the four original members: bassist/vocalist John Wetton (UK, King Crimson), drummer Carl Palmer (ELP), guitarist Steve Howe (Yes), and keyboardist Geoff Downes (Buggles, Yes), Asia is celebrating its 30th Anniversary. Six top 10 singles including Heat Of The Moment, Only Time Will Tell, Sole Survivor and Time Again, generated sales exceeding 7 million copies.

After multiple line-up changes, the stars aligned in early 2006 with all four original members of Asia reuniting to celebrate the group’s 25th anniversary. This resulted in the band releasing

"This is the real Asia," says guitarist Steve Howe. "This line-up is the one that the public embraced. Since we only toured for a couple of years, it’s nice to now play for audiences all over the world, many of whom have never seen the group in concert."

Allan Holdsworth -
None Too Soon:
Originally released in 1996, this newly remastered edition of Allan Holdsworth's
None Too Soon is a collection of interpretations of jazz standards by John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Django Reinhardt, and Joe Henderson, along with an Irving Berlin tune, two compositions by the late Gordon Beck (the album's pianist, and Allan's close personal friend of many years), and an intriguing arrangement of The Beatles' Norwegian Wood. Holdsworth fans are in for a special treat, as the musical settings provide an intriguing backdrop for some of his more adventurous soloing to date. The project's underlying agenda is revealed in his quote from the reissue liner notes: "... after I’d completed Hard Hat Area, Gordon was visiting again and he said, ‘Maybe you should do a record of tunes that people might be able to relate to.’ He had the impression that my music mostly sailed past people, and he thought that maybe if I played something recognizable, they might be able to appreciate what was going on.”

Voted "Album of the Year" in 1997 by Audiophile Imports,
None Too Soon is a modern jazz classic and remains unique among Allan Holdsworth’s many recordings. It also has the noted distinction of being the only Holdsworth album to date to feature the renowned Tribal Tech battery of bassist Gary Willis and drummer Kirk Covington. Presented in digipak format, with fresh liner notes scribed by MJR artist and Guitar Player Magazine editor, Barry Cleveland, this album is available through Moonjune Records' website and at all good record stores, including HMV and Archambault.

Tohpati Bertiga -
Riot:
World-class Indonesian guitarist Tohpati reveals further sides of his diverse musical palette with the debut from his power trio, Tohpati Bertiga.
Riot frequently puts the rockier side of Tohpati's style on display (and in full force!) on this scorching fusion shredfest. Venturing far into uncharted territory, Bertiga covers ground where few trios would dare tread -- much less in a live performance. All new compositions from Tohpati test the mettle of this trio, and they are most certainly up to the task. Augmented by imaginative melodies, twisting changes, superb soloing and driving, relentless rhythms, this album is a tour-de-force of modern fusion shredding at its most creative.

With his gifted playing taking center stage, Tohpati places yet more dimensions of his accomplished guitar stylings on display. Showing that he is just as "at home" with rock and even funk settings as he is with jazz and fusion, this album further cements his rightful place among the highest echelon of today's guitar giants. Recorded live in sparkling studio-quality fidelity,
Riot is a fine addition to Tohpati's already impressive resume. Available through Moonjune Records' website.

Interview with Mystery's Michel St-Père
By Robert Dansereau, February 12, 2012

Michel St-Père, founder, guitarist, keyboardist and composer of the symphonic prog rock band Mystery, shared his thoughts on the eve of the upcoming release of his next album, entitled The World Is A Game. I sat down with Michel at the Unicorn Digital studios, where we talked about the new CD, and even had the privilege of being one of the first to listen to the almost completed album in its entirety.

RD: When have you started working on the material for the new album?

MSP: Immediately after the release of the album One Among The Living

RD: So, no rest, right back in the studio?

MSP: Yes, there were a few compositions, two in particular, that I wrote at the very beginning of Mystery and that were never released, so we made demos of these with Benoit, but for the majority of the compositions on The World Is A Game, it's all brand new material that I composed right after the release of One Among The Living, so in the last year and a half.

RD: Did you write all the material?

MSP: Yes, aside from a few lines of lyrics here and there that were written by Benoit. The way we work usually is that I present a text to Benoit and we review the lyrics together, and sometimes, after a few days, Benoit comes back to me with a few comments like "In this verse, i'd put this instead of that" and at that point, it becomes a collaboration.

RD: Have you recorded all the demos and main tracks in your studio?

MSP: No, not everything, the main drum tracks were recorded in a studio in Toronto by Nick D'Virgilio, and the main bass tracks were laid down by Antoine Fafard in his studio in England. Aside from that, everything else was recorded right here.

RD: Anyone else contributed to this album?

MSP: No, for this album, all the guitar and keyboard tracks are from me, vocals by Benoit, drums by Nick and bass from Antoine.

RD: Steve Gagné didn't participate in the recording of this album, did he work with you on the demos?

MSP: No, he did not participate this time around, I recorded the demos by myself from A to Z. Usually, I record drum tracks by myself using a programmable drum synth, and when the demo is listenable and close to the final draft without paying too much attention to the drum sound, I present it to the band. So I had recorded four tracks for the new CD and submitted them to Benoit and Steve. Steve told me he liked them very much, but he was taking a lot of time to come back to me with a date of availability to lay down the tracks, and he eventually told me that he could not participate to the recording sessions because of his new job in provincial politics.

RD: So aside from Nick, Antoine, Benoit and you, no one else contributed to the recording sessions?

MSP: Indeed, unlike the One Among The Living recording sessions where I had numerous contributions from special musical guests including Daryl Stuermer, Claire Vézina, Oliver Wakeman, Richard Lanthier, John Jowitt and many more.

RD: All these tracks were recorded separately and assembled together at a later date?

MSP: Exactly, as a matter of fact, we used the skeleton tracks of the demos as our "click track" to construct the album, and even some of the demo tracks were used in the final recording, including guitar and back vocal tracks, because they were well recorded from the beginning and they were exactly what we needed. All the drum synth and bass synth tracks were used to synchronize the guitars, the keys and the vocals, the synth drum was then replaced by Nick's recordings, and at a later date, the synth bass was replaced by the tracks recorded by Antoine Fafard.

When I got the parts recorded by Nick and Antoine, they had a whole other dimension, so I had to re-record several guitar and keyboard tracks, the rhythms and punches weren't at the same place, bacause I had mentioned to Nick that my tracks were simply rhythm guide tracks and that he had all the latitude he wanted to adjust the tempo and the rhythm to his liking.

RD: You relied on his ear as a drummer for the tempo, the fills and the rhythms...

MSP: Yes, bacause when I program the drum synth, I get a good sound, especially with modern synth and sample libraries, you can put together he bits, adjust the speed and the tone and I get good results that are listenable, but I do that with the mind of a guitarist. When a drummer listens to the demo, he imagines that track with the mind of a drummer, so if my drum synth tempo is out of place and unnatural, he will bring back some of the fills and rhythms so its sounds more natural.

Had we practiced together, it would have sounded natural right on the first take, because we would have had the same rhythm and we would have adjusted to one another. In this case, we work a bit in the opposite way, so that's why I gave him a lot of leeway and I adjusted my guitar and keyboard tracks based on his rhythm tracks. I worked the same way with Steve Gagné on One Among The Living, he recorded his drum tracks and I tweaked the tempo afterwards.

RD: So for the previous albums, at no time did the entire band record together in the studio?

MSP: No, it never happened, the only time we were together was to practice for an upcoming concert.

RD: On the technical side, any new recording technologies used on this album?

MSP: No, not really, aside from the digital recording technologies where we can adjust rhythms, move tracks like blocks without having to re-record everything, compared to the recording of the album Destiny? where we played, recorded, and if you missed a beat, you started from scratch right up until you got it right. Aside from these digital recording technologies, nothing is much different from the last few CDs, the sound is pretty much recorded straight.

RD: Is Benoit feeling better?

MSP: Benoit is recovering, his voice is getting better, because as you know, he recently had major problems with his voice, espcially during the last Yes tour at the end of 2011 where a few of the last dates were cancelled, and his voice isn't back 100% right now. But for the Mystery album recording sessions, Benoit had laid down all of his vocals tracks before he left for the European tour with yes, and all of his recordings were impeccable, so there were no bits and pieces to re-record and he could take all the time he needed to recover properly since his departure from Yes.

RD: He is still a member of Mystery?

MSP: Yes, he's still a full-time member of Mystery.

RD: Is The World Is A Game a concept album?

MSP: No, not really. With Mystery, I don't really do concept albums, but often during the recording sessions, you can sometimes see a theme developing.

On the contrary, Beneath The Veil of Winter's Face was initially a concept album but we finally decided to break apart the concept at the suggestion of Benoit David and do it piece by piece, but Mystery fans told me they still felt the subtle guidelines of a concept in there...

One Among The Living wasn't a concept album but when you listen to it, it's obvious that the whole thing was composed, rehearsed and recorded in a short period of time, giving the impression of a concept because of the consonant theme and sound.

For The World Is A Game, there is a base subject about the passing of time, but its more a theme than a concept. All the tracks stand up together very well.

RD: Is there an epic?

MSP: Yes, there is an epic track that's 19 minutes long. On the album One Among The Living, there was the epic Through Different Eyes that we decided to break-up in six parts, but for this one, I think we'll leave it as a single 19-minute opus. A main course if you will!

RD: Any tour plans in 2012?

MSP: We certainly want to play live to promote the new CD, everything will depend on Benoit and how his voice recovers. It certainly helps now that he's no longer with Yes, we will have less constrains. When he was touring with Yes, we would have to plan our work around his availability, but still, we'll wait until his voice has completely recovered.

And if his recovery takes longer than anticipated, we'll proceed immediately with the recording of another album, where the recording process is much less demanding for Benoit since he can take breaks between takes to let his vocal cords rest.

We also thought of revisiting some of the old material from albums like Theatre of the Mind and Destiny?, and re-record them using our current digital recording technologies, and with Benoit on vocals, maybe even in 5.1... sort of a "best of" the early Mystery material, and of course we'd love to record a live album, it all depends on how many shows we'll play.

RD: Thanks!

MSP: My pleasure!

FARFEST - THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED!
Needless to say, the end of the great NEARFEST experience will leave a gaping hole in the prog fest world. So any prog-related festival, old or new, will be much sought after.

So it was great to learn the existence of a new festival, organized by Greg Walker, one of the founders of the famed ProgFest in the 90's. FARFEST will be a little different than NEARFEST as it will concentrate on prog rock bands of the 70's, some of them reunited for the first time in decades.

Their goal is to breakeven this year so that it will ensure future editions of this event. But with so many festival attendees who went to RoSFest and NEARFEST this year, times are tough and not everyone can also lineup FARFEST on their calendar this year because of limited budgets and vacation time...

But still, its survival depends on prog fans attending. With a lineup like that... it's a no brainer!

FARFEST is a new prog rock festival that will concentrate on 70's and modern 70's-sounding prog bands. The intent is to showcase legendary 70's prog bands that a lot of us only dreamed of ever seeing live and bring them all together in one festival. Since the 70's era of performing musicians will soon be drawing to a close the time is now for such an event so we offer you this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these classic bands perform.

The inaugural FARFEST will take place at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Delaware from Thursday, October 4 to Sunday, October 7, 2012.

Roger Waters bring The Wall back to Montreal
Back by popular demand, evenko and Live Nation are thrilled to present Roger Waters' The Wall at the Bell Center on Tuesday, June 26, 2012.

Roger Waters, the co-founder and principal songwriter of the archetypal progressive band Pink Floyd, has announced the return of the historic production of
The Wall to North America in 2012. His aural and visual masterpiece of alienation and transformation will be performed in-its-entirety featuring a full band and state-of-the-art production. The Wall live has played more than 120 shows around the world for more than 1.6 million fans making it one of the most successful tours of 2010 and 2011.

The 2012 tour will begin on May 1st in Houston, Texas making a 36 show trek throughout North America, including several outdoor stadium performances with state of the art modifications transforming the arena production into magnificent outdoor events. “Thirty years ago when I wrote
The Wall, I was a frightened young man,” Waters recalls. “In the intervening years it occurred to me that maybe the story of my fear and loss with its concomitant inevitable residue of ridicule, shame and punishment, provides an allegory for broader concerns: Nationalism, racism, sexism, religion, whatever! All these issues and ‘isms are driven by the same fears that drove my young life.

The Wall remains one of the most influential albums in the history of recorded music with a profound effect on pop culture, resonating with multiple generations of music fans. Prior to 2010, The Wall show was simply too large to contemplate a tour, but new arenas and advances in touring technology have solved that dilemma. Waters has updated the look and feel of the show to ensure it matches the astonishing theatrical extravaganza that The Wall’s live incarnation became so legendary for - thus allowing yet another generation to be inspired by the grandeur of the breathtaking visual and aural spectacle.

The 1980 original production of the
The Wall had been performed live-in-its-entirety just 29 times during Pink Floyd’s 1980 tour in support of the album and once in Berlin in celebration of the fall of the Berlin wall. During the New York stop, the New York Post declared, “When Roger Waters finished building The Wall in its entirety, at Madison Square Garden, it was just another brick on what was the best arena concert I've ever been to. Period.”

In addition to Roger Waters (lead vocals, bass),
The Wall live touring ensemble includes: Snowy White (Guitar), Dave Kilminster (Guitar), GE Smith (Guitar & Bass), Jon Carin (Keyboards), Harry Waters (Hammond Organ), Graham Broad (Drums), Robbie Wyckoff (Vocals), Jon Joyce, Pat Lennon, Mark Lennon and Kipp Lennon (Backing Vocals).

Along with his Montreal date on June 26, Roger will present
The Wall on two additional dates in Canada: June 23 in Toronto at the Rogers Centre and June 25 in Ottawa at the Scotiabank Place. Roger Waters performed two sold out concerts of The Wall at the Bell Center on October 19 and 20, 2010.

Tickets for the show are $68/$88/$142/$267, available on Monday, November 14 through Evenko and at the Bell Center boxoffice at 514-790-2525.

Benoit David no longer a member of Yes
The rumor spread quickly in the last few days of January that singer Benoit David, who has replaced Jon Anderson as lead singer of the group Yes in 2008, had left the band. Benoit has released an official press release explaining the situation:

"Dear Yes fans,

As you all know, the final three shows of last year's European tour were cancelled due to my ill health. On my return to Canada, I was advised to cease touring, for the foreseeable future, in order to avoid further damage to my voice. Following this extremely disappointing diagnosis, I had no alternative but to inform my fellow band members that I was unable to confirm my availability for, at least, the forthcoming concerts in New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

Although there was no alternative, I did so with a heavy heart as I felt that I was letting everyone down especially those who have supported me since I had the privilege of becoming the band's vocalist in 2008. The band members were all very understanding and asked if I would mind being replaced for the April shows - I immediately agreed that this would be the best way forward and gave them my blessing. I was then pleased to learn that Jon Davison would be my replacement as he is an accomplished musician with a fine voice.

I subsequently learnt, from a band member's interview, that I had officially left Yes and that my departure was permanent. As this is the situation, everyone should know that I will be eternally grateful for the opportunity I was given and very proud to have contributed to more than 200 concerts and to the
Fly From Here and In The Present Live From Lyon albums. I would also like to express my appreciation for the support I was given by each member of the band, the fantastic crew, the management and everyone else involved during my time as vocalist in the band. Finally, to the fans who have applauded my efforts and to those I have had the pleasure of meeting - many thanks, my best wishes and please continue with your support of one of the world's greatest bands - YES.

Although I need to take it easy for a while, I fully intend to continue with my music career. In late summer of 2011, I added vocals to Mystery's forthcoming album
The World Is A Game - which is at the final stages of mixing and will be available in the near future. This is my third collaboration with Michel St-Pére, and Mystery, following 2007's Beneath the Veil of Winter's Face and 2010's One Among The Living. So I guess I will, hopefully, see you somewhere down the road.

New music
Cool new music from all around the world, here are some recent (and future) releases of interest:

Tony Banks -
Six-Pieces for Orchestra:
Tony Banks, founding member of rock band Genesis, is about to release a new solo album, entitled
Six-Pieces for Orchestra. His new work consists of six evocative instrumental songs which may arouse in the listener ideas of seduction, journeys, heroes, quests, decisions and goals. Two of the pieces feature solo instruments alto saxophone on Siren and violin on Blade played here by elite soloists, which mesh into Banks's orchestral tapestry with bewitching effect. The remaining pieces reveal his outstanding lyrical gifts and total command of musical narrative. On this new album, Tony is accompanied by renowned musicians Charlie Siem and Martin Robertson. The album, to be released on March 26, 2012, will be available at all good record stores, including HMV, Archambault and FreeSon Rock

Arjen Lucassen -
Lost in the New Real:
Arjen Lucassen, the musical genius behind Ayreon, Star One, Stream of Passion and many others, will at last release a solo album on May 8, 2012. The long-awaited 2-CD album will be available at all good record stores, including HMV, Archambault and FreeSon Rock.

Here is the tracklist:
CD1:
1) The New Real
2) Pink Beatles In A Purple Zeppelin
3) Parental Procreation Permit
4) When I'm A Hundred Sixty-Four
5) E-Police
6) Don't Switch Me Off
7) Dr Slumber's Eternity Home
8) Yellowstone Memorial Day
9)Where Pigs Fly
10) Lost In The New Real
plus Bonus CDROM section: "Behind The New Real"

CD2
1) Our Imperfect Race
2) Welcome To The Machine (Pink Floyd cover)
3) So Is There No God?
4) Veteran Of The Psychic Wars (Blue Oyster Cult Cover)
5) The Social Recluse
6) Battle Of Evermore (Led Zeppelin Cover)
7) The Space Hotel
8) Some Other Time (Alan Parsons Project Cover)
9) You Have Entered The Reality Zone
10) I'm The Slime (Frank Zappa Cover)
plus Bonus CDROM section: "The Artwork"

Since finishing the latest Star One album in 2010), Arjen has been hard at work on his next release: a solo album, entitled
Lost in the New Real. Releasing a solo album is something he wanted to do for a long time.

"I've been waiting to record a solo album with just me singing for about 10 years now. But I always seem to come across singers whom I would like to work with, so my last solo attempts have turned into an Ayreon, Star One or Guilt Machine release instead! But now the time is right and I feel very inspired!"

Arjen is handling the lead vocal duties as well as playing all the guitars, keyboards, and bass. There is one guest vocalist helping out with backing vocals, and some guest instrumentalists as well. The album also features screen acting legend Rutger Hauer in the role of the album's narrator.

What should fans expect with regard to the album's sound and style? As Arjen puts it: "This is turning out to be quite an eclectic album, with widely varied styles like prog, folk, psychedelica, atmospheric, and a heavy bit here and there. So with all this variation, you could say that this is an album for open-minded listeners! As a reaction to the dark feel of my last album, this album has a more positive, upbeat feel overall. Conceptually it could be compared to a song-oriented Ayreon album (without all the guest singers, of course), as all the songs are linked to a central theme. At this stage it's still too early to reveal any details about the concept, but I can say that it's a highly personal album, one from the heart. I haven't enjoyed myself like this in years!"

SBB, a legendary progressive rock band from Poland, is still active after over 42 years, and will return this June with a brand new studio album simply titled

The Seventh Degree Of Separation special edition package is a 56 minute long, 13 track CD in a 3 leafed digibook with a 28 page pullout booklet packed with original artwork + a bonus 50 minute DVD “The making of The Seventh Degree Of Separation”, where each member of the band gives you some insight into the process they go through to make the music.

“I must say the album is sounding great; very powerful and atmospheric. The music to me is another part of the Arena evolution, although there is still that intrinsic ‘Arena-sound’ pervading the album.” says keyboardist Clive Nolan. You can hear a sample of the album at www.arenaband.com. This special edition package is now available for pre-order exclusively at www.verglas.com and you will receive your special edition package before the official release date, and will be available at the usual specialist retailers and on-line providers like Syn-Phonic.

One of the songs, The Main Monster, became a local radio hit. Both album covers are reproduced in the booklet, as well as previously unseen photos and biographic notes. And as a bonus treat, both sides of their 1970 single are included. Available through ProgQuébec's online store, as well as all good local record stores including Archambault and Freeson!
