New music
Cool new music from all around the world, here are some recent (and future) releases of interest:
Levin Minnemann Rudess - From the Law Offices of Levin Minnemann Rudess: Featuring the talents of bass legend Tony Levin, Marco Minnemann on drums and guitars and Jordan Rudess on keyboards, the new album From the Law Offices of Levin Minnemann Rudess is a follow-up to the highly successful self-titled debut record of the famed trio. Available in regular CD format and in limited edition with bonus DVD through the LMR online store and at all good indie record stores, including Freeson Rock.
The Fringe - The Fringe: A bold, electrifying trio consisting of Randy McStine (Lo-Fi Resistance), Jonas Reingold (Karmakanic, The Flower Kings), and Nick D'Virgilio (Big Big Train). After nearly three years since their initial meeting, the eponymous debut album, The Fringe has arrived. Prompted by D'Virgilio's desire to put together a trio for a pair of shows in Poland, The Fringe had an organic, blossoming chemistry from the very beginning. In enlisting Reingold and McStine, the three explored new arrangements of songs from their respective catalogs. It was clear after their short time together that continuing on as a group was in everyone's best interests. Although modern recording technology would've easily allowed for D'Virgilio, McStine, and Reingold to write and record their debut album from remote locations, the spark of working together in the same room was strongly felt during their first sessions. The trio decided to approach the rest of project in this manner, making Sweetwater Studios its home base. Within two additional writing and recording sessions, the remainder of the songs on the record were solidified. Upon completion, it is clear that The Fringe has captured the hallmarks of what we've come to adore about our favorite Rock power trios of yesteryear, while becoming a fresh addition to today's musical landscape. Loaded with possibilities and an excitement for venturing into the unknown, Nick D'Virgilio, Randy McStine, and Jonas Reingold present us their first chapter together as The Fringe. Available at all good indie record stores, including Freeson Rock.

The diagnosis of the musician was revealed by the group on May 24 and The Tragically Hip tour was announced the next day.
Tickets for the 15 concerts planned have gone very quickly. Peter Hammill in Montreal: Contest winner!
Legendary singer-songwriter Peter Hammill will be performing at the Club Soda (1225 St-Laurent) in Montreal on Wednesday, June 1st, 2016. The founding member of Van Der Graaf Generator will come to present the highlights of his solo work.
The contest for the pair of tickets to the
Club Soda show has now ended and we have a winner!
Congratulations to Nick D'amico of Montreal !
Thanks to all who have participated and
a big thanks to JLC Musik for the great prize!
Besides his career with Van Der Graaf Generator, Peter Hammill produced thirty four solo albums over a period stretching from 1971 to 2014. The British musician will perform on guitar, piano and vocals. The work of Peter Hammill has always been independent and uncompromising. With little continuity from one album to another, the artist is constantly in search of new sounds. His unique voice ranges from a primal scream to a murmur. His register ranges from baritone to falsetto and he switches easily from one to the other.
From his participation in Van Der Graaf Generator, the music of Peter Hammill has often been described as progressive rock. The singer has always denied this assertion since he says his music can not be labeled to a single category. Hammill was cited as a major influence by many artists including the Scottish singer Fish (Marillion). The contest for the pair of tickets to the

David Brighton is credited as being the world's best David Bowie impersonator, with one of the most entertaining tribute acts ever to hit the stage.
This full-scale stage production, from Los Angeles, is complete with flamboyant costume changes, elaborate staging, perfectly emulated vocal stylings and one of the best backing bands in the business. All of the many faces of Bowie are present… from stadium-sized pop phenomenon, to space-age rock and roll alien Ziggy Stardust… and so is the excitement and electricity.
Before entering the world of celebrity impersonation, David Brighton played lead guitar with a number of popular recording artists. His stint as a sideman began with a phone call from Kevin Dubrow of Quiet Riot. Dubrow tapped Brighton to replace the legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads. David also enjoyed portraying George Harrison around the world with a number of the world's top Beatle groups, including Rain, The Stars of Beatlemania, The Fab Four, 1964, Twist And Shout, Classical Mystery Tour, and When We Were Fab. Produced by Rubin Fogel Production.

Contest winner
The duo of legendary musicians Jon Anderson and Jean-Luc Ponty will be at Théâtre St-Denis 2 on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 8:00 PM.
The contest for the pair of tickets to the Théâtre St-Denis show has now ended and we have a winner!
Congratulations to Jean-Marc Savoie of Otterburn Park!
Thanks to all who have participated and a big thanks to Rubin Fogel Productions for the great prize!
In 2014, music icons Jon Anderson and Jean-Luc Ponty combined their musical talents to form a virtual supergroup - TheAndersonPonty Band. Yes's original singer-songwriter for 35 years, Jon Anderson has had a successful solo career, which includes working with such notable music artists as Vangelis, Kitaro and Milton Nascimento. Internationally-acclaimed virtuoso, Jean-Luc Ponty, is a pioneer and undisputed master of the violin in the arenas of both jazz and rock. He is widely regarded as an innovator who has applied his unique visionary spin that has expanded the vocabulary of modern music. Together, these two legends have formed a musical synergy that is unparalleled. "breakthrough feeling came as I sang with Jean-Luc's music. To be in a band again is very exciting on many levels‚ we will play and sing our way around the world and have fun, for music is pleasure, music is all that is, music is God." - Jon Anderson
"Collaborating with Jon, who is such a creative singer/songwriter is unlike any project I have done before. I knew that we had plenty of musical affinities to make it work, but the result is way beyond my expectations. It is also a lot of fun to reunite with these excellent musicians who played with me in the past, they really put their heart in this project and with Jon's creative input we are not just rehashing the past but giving a new life to the music we started developing decades ago" - Jean Luc Ponty
The AndersonPonty Band also includes well known guitarist, Jamie Glaser, who has worked with Jean-Luc Ponty, Chick Corea, Bryan Adams and Lenny White; genius keyboardist and composer, Wally Minko, who has performed and recorded with many stars including Pink, Tom Jones, Toni Braxton, Barry Manilow, Gregg Rolie and Jean-Luc Ponty; veteran bassist Keith Jones; and drummer-percussionist Rayford Griffin, who has played with Stanley Clarke Band, George Duke, Jean-Luc Ponty and Michael Jackson.
The band visits the music created by Jon Anderson and Jean-Luc Ponty over the years with new arrangements, virtuosic performances and new energy. Jean-Luc was originally approached by Jon with the idea of working together as far back as the 1980's. Now 30 years later, the dream has finally come to fruition! Along with rearranging old favorites, The AndersonPonty Band has created breathtaking new compositions. The group was in residence for three weeks in September 2014 at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen, Colorado, rehearsing, recording and later playing a public performance. An album, Better Late Than Never, featuring the performance was released in Fall 2015, along with a videography documenting the making of the album. A Rubin Fogel Productions presentation.
Tickets: $79.50, $69.50 (taxes included / service charge extra) at the St-Denis box office (1594 rue St-Denis / Metro Berri), (514) 790-1111, 1-800-848-1594 and theatrestdenis.com.

Keith Emerson dies
Keith Emerson, founding member and keyboardist of Emerson, Lake and Palmer and a prog rock legend, died Friday, March 11, 2016. He was 71. His bandmate Carl Palmer and the trio's official Facebook confirmed Emerson's death. TMZ reported that police found Emerson with a single gunshot wound to the head, though they could not confirm that Emerson died by suicide. "We regret to announce that Keith Emerson died last night at his home in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, aged 71. We ask that the family’s privacy and grief be respected," the band wrote.
"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my good friend and brother-in-music, Keith Emerson," Palmer wrote in a statement. "Keith was a gentle soul whose love for music and passion for his performance as a keyboard player will remain unmatched for many years to come. He was a pioneer and an innovator whose musical genius touched all of us in the worlds of rock, classical and jazz. I will always remember his warm smile, good sense of humor, compelling showmanship and dedication to his musical craft. I am very lucky to have known him and to have made the music we did together."
After discovering the Hammond and Moog in his teenage years, Emerson grew into one of the greatest keyboardists of his generation, first as a member of the Nice before founding the prog supergroup Emerson, Lake and Palmer. ELP formed in 1970 after Emerson, guitarist Greg Lake (formerly of King Crimson) and drummer Carl Palmer, a veteran of the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, joined together for a project that would better showcase their musicianship. - Rolling Stone Magazine 11/03/2016

Martin Levac "1985 - The Show" kickstarter
After the successful release of his brilliant "1985" album, the talented musician/composer Martin Levac is once again organizing a kickstarter campaign for his project to bring 1985 onstage! Here's Martin in his own words, describing the project:
Following the success of the 2015 campaign for the production of the 1985 album, now I want to offer you the show! This show will be composed with songs of my 3 original albums as well as some ''covers''. The musicians and the technical team will be the same as on the Dance Into The Light show. I promise you a stunning and high quality show!
We've sharpened our pencils and estimated total costs of $35,000. The funds will go to cover : the rehearsal studio fees, musical arrangements, the musicians pay, lighting design, staging , costumes , accessories , projector and a screen, transportation, food, promotional material, all costs related to the pre-production of the show. I would like to mention that we have no grant and we produce everything ourselves from A to Z. My Kickstarter goal is $10 000. So about 1/3 of expenditure. for everything else... There is Master Card!
So if this project titillates your interest, head on down to the Martin Levac 1985 - The Show Kickstarter page and drop a few loonies on what looks to be a fantastic concert poject! Also check his 1985 Concert project Youtube video!

The Wall Theater Experience at Club Soda: a review
A concert review by Robert Dansereau - 01/07/2016
On Thursday, February 4, I went to see Richard Petit's gang and his show "The Wall Theater Experience" at the Club Soda in Montreal. All I can say is that if you have the opportunity to go see that show, it's an absolute must-see! A brilliant interpretation of Pink Floyd's classic album, The Wall.
A sublime performance, with top-notch musicians, and an absolutely brilliant stage setting, completely out of the ordinary! I must have seen hundreds of concerts in my life and I can honestly say that I have never seen anything like it! A cross between The Wall show, and the motion picture ...
Kudos to the idea of starting off the show with "When The Tigers Broke Free", a song by Roger Waters, who at the time did not make it on "The Wall" but was an integral part of the history of the famous concept album.
9 musicians on an imposing stage on two levels with a spectacular light show, 5 brilliant vocalists: Sébastien Lacombe offering Pink's tortured vocals, Sylvain Auclair, oscillating between Gilmour and the mean school teacher, Richard Petit with the threatening tone of Pink's "Surrogate band" and "The Trial" Judge, and Eva Avila & Meggie Lagacé offering a moving choir. I really got into that show full tilt!
I tip my hat to the formidable guitarist Michel Bruno who was able to capture the essence of Gilmour with solos that gave me goosebumps! The whole team was like fine clockwork, it was really beautiful to see!
I swear to you, you have to see this! I guarantee you hours of intense pleasure! And if you missed the show, fear not! They will be back at the Club Soda on Friday, March 4, 2016! Show at 8:30 PM, tickets $32.25 now available through the Club Soda website.
Msny thanks to Michel Parent for the great photos. Check his Facebook page for the whole album!

New "half" album from Steven Wilson
Steven Wilson is about to release a "complementary" album in the style of Nil Recurring and Drive Home: January 22 will see the release of the new album 4 1/2, so titled because it forms an interim release between Steven’s recently released fourth album Hand. Cannot. Erase. and the next studio album.
4 1/2 comprises 6 tracks with a total running time of 37 minutes. 4 of the songs originated during the sessions for Hand. Cannot. Erase., and one from the recording sessions for the previous album The Raven that Refused to Sing. The final track is a version of Don’t Hate Me, a song originally recorded by Porcupine Tree in 1998, and is based on a live recording made on the recent tour of Europe with additional recording later done in the studio. The vocals on this new version are sung as a duet between Steven and Ninet Tayeb.
Also appearing on the album are members of Steven’s band over the last few years; Adam Holzman, Nick Beggs, Guthrie Govan, Dave Kilminster, Craig Blundell, Marco Minnemann, Chad Wackerman, and Theo Travis.
4 1/2 will be released by Kscope on CD, 180 gram vinyl, and blu-ray, with all formats housed in a beautiful die-cut sleeve photographed by Lasse Hoile and designed by Carl Glover. The blu-ray (audio only) edition includes high res stereo, a 5.1 mix of the album, and a bonus 5.1 mix of the new version of Lazarus (recently included on the Transience vinyl compilation). The vinyl edition will include a download code for the album in a choice of FLAC or mp3. The album will also be available digitally on 22nd January from iTunes, Amazon, Google Play & Apple Music.

Black Sabbath farewell show
It's the Beginning of THE END. Black Sabbath will be at the Bell Center one last time, on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at 7:30pm, accompanied by opening band Rival Sons.

Now it ENDS, the final tour by the greatest Metal Band of all time, Black Sabbath. Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler close the final chapter in the final volume of the incredible Black Sabbath story.
Black Sabbath’s farewell tour, THE END, begins on January 20, 2016 and it promises to surpass all previous tours with their most mesmerizing production ever. Check out their tour promo video.
When this tour concludes, it will truly be THE END of one of most legendary bands in Rock ’n Roll history... Tickets are $52 to $169, available through evenko and at the Bell Center boxoffice.
