New music
Cool new music from all around the world, here are some recent (and future) releases of interest:

Moraine -
Groundswell:
Moraine's long-anticipated third CD for MoonJune Records,
Groundswell, marks a major step forward for the shape-shifting Seattle-based instrumental juggernaut. Engineered by legendary Pacific Northwest producer Steve Fisk, Groundswell is the first Moraine release to fully exploit the creative possibilities of the recording studio, resulting in a dramatic sonic experience with plenty of surprises. Consisting largely of previously unreleased material, including pieces written for Moraine by composers Daniel Barry and Jon Davis, is certain to cement the band’s standing as a singular voice like no other in the progressive jazz-rock continuum. Led by seasoned guitarist Dennis Rea and featuring ace instrumentalists Alicia DeJoie (violin), James DeJoie (woodwinds), Kevin Millard (bass), and new drummer Tom Zgonc, Moraine quickly built a reputation as one of the most original instrumental rock bands anywhere, winning over listeners around the globe with its unique amalgam of art rock, forward-thinking jazz, Asian-inspired music, and more. With a distinctive repertoire balancing rigorously composed passages with exploratory improvisation, Moraine has captivated audiences with memorable performances at most of North America’s major progressive-rock showcases, including NEARfest and Baja Prog. The band’s previous releases for MoonJune Records, manifest deNsity and Metamorphic Rock, garnered hundreds of glowing reviews worldwide and earned the band a diverse following ranging from jazz aficionados to metalheads to world-music enthusiasts. Available through Moonjune Records and at all good indie record stores including Freeson Rock.

Kaipa - Sattyg:
Legendary Swedish progressive rock band Kaipa, featuring the mighty Jonas Reingold, Hans Lundin, Per Nilsson, Morgan Ågren and Patrik Lundström return in November 2014 with their 12th studio album Sattyg. The unique mix of Swedish folk music, rock and fusion with a tinge of medieval music has given the band a special place in many peoples heart all around the world. Transatlantic - KaLIVEoscope:
The much anticipated live recording of last year's Kaleidoscope tour by prog supergroup Transatlantic, will be released in the next few days. Neal morse describes the album: "The Kaleidoscope tour was indeed a landmark for Transatlantic. It was our first time in many parts of the world, and it was indeed epic! We grew as a band and as people and if you got to be there at one of the shows, you know how incredible it was! This live DVD, Blu-ray and all the rest, captures Transatlantic in an amazing way, and I'm sure you're going to love it!" Available in 3 versions: Limited Deluxe Edition Box Set (Cologne DVD + 3 Tilburg audio CDs + Cologne BluRay + Bonus DVD) Special Edition Digipak (3 Tilburg audio CDs + Cologne DVD) and in BluRay (Cologne - 1 disc). Look for it at all good record stores including Archambault and Freeson Rock as well as on Radiant Records.

Modest Midget - Crysis:
Being the follow up to The Great Prophecy album, and written during the last tour and recorded right after it, this new album is probably even more excentric than the first. Check out this cool video clip to whet your appetite. On one hand, daring and cheeky compositions and on the other a yet more straight from the heart and humane sound, this album is one complete piece of work that consists of songs and instrumentals which are just as strong together as they are varied. Strong, sharp lyrics of both global and personal character, colourful melodies and harmonies, woven together in within a meticulous production, and wrapped in a subtle yet lush package with a 24 page lyric booklet designed by Netaly Reshef. The album is available though Bandcamp in digital format and in CD format, and through the band's online store.

Flying Colors - Second Nature:
2nd album of Mike Portnoy's other prog supergroup, Flying Colors also includes Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs/Deep Purple), Casey McPherson, Neal Morse and Dave LaRue. According to drummer Mike Portnoy, the album benefits from a bigger "chemistry" between members. "The first album was very much a blind date. This time there was an existing chemistry – we not only had the prior experiences of making the debut album, but also the 2012 tour as well. Direction was never discussed; we just did what we do." Also according to Portnoy, the album was recorded in a Led Zeppelin-ish way, with the members meeting for a couple of days, then carrying on with their other commitments, then going back to record more parts, and so on. The result is an exuberant, breathtaking 65 minutes of mind-blowing progressive rock! The album is available on CD and in vinyl format on the Mascot Label Group, through Amazon, in digital format through iTunes and at all good record stores including Archambault and Freeson Rock.

Wolve - SleepWalker:
French proggers Wolve present their debut album, SleepWalker: a solid, consistent, varied album, featuring prog rock, folky alt rock, space rock and much more! Wolve tells a journey that leads man to his animal side. Born to cross borders, explore territories, Wolve tells that story through an organic and instinctive music. The album is available in download format and a limited edition of 200 CDs from Bandcamp.

Jelly Fiche at the Gesù: a concert review
by Robert Dansereau - 09/28/2014
I was one of the privileged to attend the Jelly Fiche concert yesterday, Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Gesù. And what a wonderful evening it was!

This new show called Sous Influence Musicale was the perfect combination of all the favorite things of any progressive rock fan; a group of hyper-talented members, playing with passion and enthusiasm, with a perfect selection of music – their most famous and popular compositions from their first two albums, interspersed with classical compositions from progressive rock bands that influenced them – all presented in two generous sets with a 20 minute intermission.

Among the classics they revisited, there was a mathematically perfect interpretation of Gentle Giant's Freehand, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, He Knows You Know by Marillion, with Sylvain Auclair on vocals, an absolutely sensational version of 21st Century Schizoid Man, and a stirring and powerful rendition of Crime of the Century, a most energetic and exuberant version of Roundabout, and a beautiful, original interpretation of Wish You Were Here with Thomas Brodeur on the beatbox!

They also presented two brand new songs, including one entitled Eau Bleue, which is available on iTunes, and from which the group will donate all benefits to the David Suzuki Foundation.

The evening ended in a perfect way with La Cage des Vautours from their first album. Despite the modest crowd, the whole band played at full power, including Syd with his powerful voice and remarkable theatrical performance, and our old buddy Sébastien, always energetic, passionate and impeccable!

This show would have certainly deserved more attention and a larger audience. But those who attended have certainly got their money's worth. Again, I must remind the progressive rock fans of Montreal that the only way to ensure the continuation of our little community is to support exceptional performances like the one we saw yesterday.

New music
Cool new music from all around the world, here are some recent (and future) releases of interest:

Yes -
Heaven & Earth:
Heaven & Earth, the 21st album of legendary prog rock band Yes, is the first album featuring new singer Jon Davison, who joined the band in 2012 after the departure of Benoit David. A new offering of adult contemporary pop music mixed with elements of symphonic prog rock, that will remind you of the pop-oriented material on The Ladder, 90125 and Union.

The 2014 version of Yes is more and more distant from their 70's sound and more in line with the late 80's and 90's sound. Pleasant, enthusiastic ballads, laced with proggy riffs and one epic symphonic track to complete the tracklist. Produced by Roy Thomas Baker, and mixed by former Yes member Billy Sherwood,
Heaven & Earth will be released in July and will be available at all good record stores, including Archambault and Freeson Rock.

Rob Reed -
Sanctuary:
Multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Robert Reed, of Magenta fame, announces the release of a unique new album,
Sanctuary on Tigermoth Records. Sanctuary is produced, mixed and engineered by Robert Reed, who is joined by legendary Tubular Bells producers Tom Newman (as co-producer) and Simon Heyworth, who mastered the album. The album will be released on CD/DVD 5.1 surround and vinyl.

Robert Reed was inspired to become a musician and composer at the age of seven after discovering Mike Oldfield’s
Tubular Bells. So inspired was he by the album, that he learned to play not just one, but all the instruments featured on the album. Sanctuary is the fruition of a decision that Robert made in January 2013 to utilise his abilities as a multi-instrumentalist and create an album in the style of Tubular Bells; he recalls: "The next four weeks were a blur as the music just came out. It turned out to be the most enjoyable album I’ve made. I wanted to play all the instruments, and for all of them to be real; no synthesised or sampled instruments, just the real thing. Everything is played by hand by myself, except for guest vocalists, Synergy Vocals." The result is an astounding piece of emotional instrumental music. Sanctuary will be available at all good indie record stores, including Freeson Rock.

Opeth -
Pale Communion:
Pale Communion is the upcoming eleventh studio album by Swedish progressive metal band Opeth. The album will be released in late August through Roadrunner Records. The album was produced by Mikael Åkerfeldt and mixed by Steven Wilson. The album will lean more towards progressive rock than towards heavy metal. Mikael Åkerfeldt said of the album, "I wanted to do something more melodic with this album, so there's stronger vocal melodies and more melodies overall for this album." Pale Communion could be described as the missing link between Damnation and Ghost Reveries. The new album will be available at all good record stores, including Archambault and Freeson Rock.

Turbo -
The Fifth Element:
The legend of the polish hard & heavy scene, Turbo, returned this Spring with a brand new studio album entitled
The Fifth Element. Their first release since 2009, it includes brand new material packed with solid heavy metal.
Guitarist Wojciech Hoffmann said "Turbo’s sixteen studio album features thrilling and fast tracks which should satisfy all fans of classic hard & heavy sounds. We do believe that with this album we can easily compete with the elite of the metal scene."

Listen to This War Machine, taken from the new album
The Fifth Element on the Metal Mind Label. The new album is available on the Metal Mind online store.

Glass Hammer -
Ode To Echo:

The Watch -
Tracks From The Alps:
Le nouvel album de The Watch Intitulée Tracks From The Alps est leur 7ème album. The Watch continuent leur exploration sonore très réussie d'une version contemporaine de ce que Genesis de l'ère Gabriel ressemblerait aujourd'hui, avec une série de compositions énergique et inspirantes, et nous offrent même un interprétation d'une pièce obscure de Genesis, Going Out To Get You, brillamment retravaillée!

Stream Of Passion -
A War Of Our Own:

Montreal's Mystery has a new singer!
It was a sad moment when singer Benoit David had to bow out of Mystery for the same reason he had to depart from Yes last year. Now here are the latest news on the band's quest for a new lead singer, from Michel St-Père:

Mystery announces New Lead Vocalist - March 14th 2014

Dear Mystery Fans,
I would like to announce that Canadian singer Jean Pageau will be replacing Benoit David as Mystery’s lead singer. The singer from Gatineau, Quebec became an official Mysteron on March 9th 2014 and is now preparing with the band for up coming live performances and a new studio album. Jean is a great singer and we are very excited to be making new music together.

Benoit David leaving Mystery: It has not been as easy for us to say goodbye. Benoit Joined Mystery in 1999 and we released our first album (
Beneath the Veil of Winter’s Face) with Benoit on vocals in 2007 followed by One Among the Living in 2010 and The World is a Game in 2012.

In the spring of 2012, as we were preparing for our first European shows, Benoit discussed with me his desire to take a break from Music and Mystery for a while. He fulfilled his commitment to do all of the shows that were booked for Mystery up until the Toronto show in June. We took the summer off, and in the Fall, Benoit announced that he was officially leaving the band. We kept the search for a new singer a Mystery.

Benoit’s contribution to the music of Mystery is and will always be considered remarkable, full of passion and emotion for us. He remains one of the best singer I have had the chance to hear, and luckily for me, to work with. I wish him all the best and will always be grateful for the works we created together. As things seemed to speed up for Mystery, we had to slow down, take a pause and see where we were going.

It has not been easy quest for us in finding someone to fill Benoit’s shoes and has in fact proved to be a difficult task. But we are excited to be back now and are looking forward to seeing all of you soon with new singer Jean Pageau on stage with us.

Michel St-Père

Goblin at the National: Cancelled!
The Concert of Claudio Simonetti's incarnation of Goblin that was scheduled on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the National (1220 Ste-Catherine East, Montreal) has been cancelled.

Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase. Here is Claudio Simonetti's statement about the cancellation:
"As far as Claudio Simonetti's Goblins USA tour - which should have taken place from the 12th to the 25th of July - is concerned, it is our duty to clarify that its cancellation doesn't have anything to do with Claudio Simonetti and the whole band's will.

On the contrary, any kind of responsibility falls upon the American Agency which was managing the Dawn of the Dead Tour, and did not respect the requested guarantees, confirmed by already signed contracts. As for agreements, we should have received those guarantee within the 30th of April. Therefore, we deny the untrue information about Claudio Simonetti and Goblin's voluntary decision to not take part in a tour which they cared a lot about.

Claudio Simonetti wants to make clear that it will be his duty to reorganize the tour, as soon as he can, and he is already working for that to happen".

Jelly Fiche: 3rd album on hold
Many people have asked lately on several social networks when will the next Jelly Fiche album be released? Well, I regret to announce that it will not come any time soon, certainly not this year, and I do not know when we will be able to work on it again for now.

Let me explain, we wanted to make an album with a bit more of a pop style, more accessible, so we recorded new material and as we reached the mixing stage, we eventually abandoned the idea.

Not wanting to dilute the group's art, we decided to take a step back and write more material to return to the style that fans know us for, good progressive rock, even though we might have less opportunities to play this material live.

So that is where the idea of a new group called Flying Joes was formed, which will give us the opportunity to play original/cover material and stay active on the musical scene. So we want to thank our fans for their patience and understanding! See you soon!

Olias of Sunhillow on limited edition SACD
Much to the excitement of Jon Anderson and Yes fans worldwide, Audio Fidelty is releasing Jon's critically acclaimed 1976 debut solo album Olias Of Sunhillow on a limited numbered edition Hybrid SACD on January 21, 2014! Jon Anderson's Olias Of Sunhillow was released in the summer of 1976 and is one of his most acclaimed solo works. It's one of five solo albums released by members of Yes around that time and one of the most successful of those solo efforts, reaching No. 8 in the UK charts and breaking into the US Top 50.

"If you go to do a solo album you should be by yourself. That’s what I was thinking. I had all the instruments I was going to use like sitar and drums and things. It came out the other end four months later and for the first time I put musician on my passport knowing that I was a musician," Jon recently told Ultimate Classic Rock

The music is written and performed almost entirely by Anderson using synthesizers, tape loops, ethnic instruments, sound effects and different voices. Some of the synthesizer sounds ring of those found on contemporary Vangelis pieces with whom Jon had just recorded the year before. He emphasizes his interest in Celtic and Central Asian musical ideas much more here than before and creates a rich, evocative world.

Anderson has stated the album's concept was inspired by Roger Dean's 1972 Yes, Fragile cover art as well as works by J.R.R. Tolkien. It's all as detailed and rich as any fantasy novel. It is a progressive rock concept album which tells the story of an alien race and their journey to a new world, an interstellar exodus from Sunhillow on a spaceship designed by the architect, Olias.

Olias glides along seamlessly from one piece to another, showcasing Anderson's uncommon gifts for melody and harmony as well as for songwriting. Together with arrangements that veer from the rustic to sci-fi, the music appears to travel through Earth and Space, incarnating the elements of the material and ethereal worlds. The scope of the music is cinematic, freely pursuing concepts to every corner of its vision and fashioning an experience that is as breathtaking for its range as it is for its depth.

The packaging features a series of artworks by the artist David Fairbrother Roe.

Prog rock supergroup Transatlantic will be back in Montreal on Thursday, February 6, 2014, at the Olympia de Montréal (1004, Ste-Cathertine East).

The contest for the pair of tickets to the show has ended, and we have a winner:

Congratulation to
Marylène Poudrier of Mont St-Hilaire!

Thanks again to JLJ Musik for this great prize, and to all who have participated.

The band, composed of Mike Portnoy (Flying Colors, The Winery Dogs and ex-Dream Theater), Neal Morse (ex-Spock's Beard), Pete Trewavas (Marillion) and Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings) will also stop in Quebec City the day before. The guys have just finished recording their 4th studio album entitled
Kaleidoscope, which took a while to complete because of different other musical projects by the four musicians. The new album features 5 tracks for a total of 75 minutes of proggy goodness, and will be released in January 2014. Their last album, The Whirlwind, was released almost 4 years ago and the band visited Montreal in April 2010 for that formidable tour!

The concert will begin at 8:00 PM (doors at 7:00 PM) and tickets will be $61.85/$73.35, available starting October 12 at noon through Admission or at the Olympia boxoffice.

A new solo album by Roger Waters
Roger Waters has been talking about his activities since finishing The Wall Live on September 21st, in Paris, France. Clearly determined to keep working, rather than taking a much deserved rest after the rigours of the tour, he's been hard at work on his new album. "I finished a demo of it last night," he tells Rolling Stone. "It's 55 minutes long. It's songs and theater as well. I don't want to give too much away, but it's couched as a radio play. It has characters who speak to each other, and it's a quest. It's about an old man and a young child trying to figure out why they are killing the children." This will be his first solo album in over 20 years.

Rolling Stone asks if he's likely to tour the new album once it is complete. "I'm suffering a little bit of withdrawal after ending the Wall tour," he says. "It's sort of a relief to not have to go out and do that every night, but they're such a great team. There were 180 of us together everyday. That piece was very moving every night." Waters continued: "I can't top that tour. First of all, you have to accept the fact that I'm not going to live forever. I'm 70 years old. You just have to accept that when you do something as enormous as that tour. The hardest thing in the world is thinking of something to do, so going and doing it is a reward in itself."

With that in mind, he refuses to rule out the possibility of reviving The Wall tour at some point in the future. "I'm not thinking about that right now," he says. "But that's not to say I won't. I think there's an audience there. We did do 219 shows, which is a lot." (source: Rolling Stone magazine, 15/11/13)

An album review:
HUIS - DESPITE GUARDIAN ANGELS
by Robert Dansereau

Despite Guardian Angels is the first album by Montreal prog rock band Huis. The band is composed of an excellent gathering of seasoned veterans of the Montreal music scene including Michel Joncas on bass, Pascal Lapierre on keyboards, Sylvain Descoteaux on vocals, William Régnier on drums and Michel St-Père on guitars. Formed in late 2009 by Michel and Pascal, with Sylvain, William and Michel joining the band more recently, the quintet hit the studios early in the summer of 2013 to record their sensational debut album. The CD will be released in early January.

Despite Guardian Angels incorporates all of the staples of a great prog rock album, including lush instrumentation, odd time signatures, sharp tempo changes, well balanced, omnipresent keyboards with hammond, moog and mellotron tones, mesmerizinc compositions impeccably interpreted, highly cohesive, never going overboard on the symphonic side, and with Michel St-Père's elegant and tasteful guitar work throughout. The album as a whole flows incredibly well between the vocal and instrumental components.

The musical themes explored on this album range from medieval sounds inspired by Alan Parsons, to snappy and energetic rock compositions, all the way to soaring melodic symphonic prog rock, and features a well-balanced mix of ballads and rhythmic compositions, with strong classic progressive rock roots, but sill remakably original and refreshing.

Highlights are the excellent instrumental compositions Oude Kerk I & II featuring fantastic guitar solos and a great rhythm section, and the stunning Little Anne showcasing Sylvain's melodious vocals, with a serene intro that builds into a lofty crescendo. There are no long epics on Despite Guardian Angels, with track lengths ranging between 3 and 9 minutes, a total of 11 tracks clocking at 73 minutes.

What a wonderful new musical discovery! Fans of highly melodic symphonic progressive music will enjoy this new album thoroughly. Highly recommended!

New music
Cool new music from all around the world, here are some recent (and future) releases of interest:

Ayreon - The Theory of Everything:
The new album from Dutch singer, songwriter and musician Arjen Anthony Lucassen AKA Ayreon. This is the most cohesive and consistent of all the Ayreon albums, but it is also full of diverse styles and sounds. Mingling with progressive metal are some really excellent Irish and eastern riffs. Arjen puts his guest musicians to good use (including John Wetton, Cristina Scabbia, Tommy Karevik, Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, Jordan Rudess, Steve Hackett and many more), with the keyboards being especially notable.

The Theory of Everything will be available in regular 2-CD format, a special 2CD+DVD edition and a 2-vinyl LP edition. There is also a very special 4CD+DVD artbook edition, which includes a LP-sized artbook with a 48-page booklet2+2 CDs , 4 CDs (The actual album plus full instrumental versions) and a DVD with 2 1/2 hours of behind-the scenes content, including a 47-minute "Making of" documentary, 90 minutes of in-depth interviews, and time lapse clips of the recording sessions. The album will be available through the Arjen Lucassen online store and at all good record stores, including Archambault and Freeson Rock.

Les Païens -
Carte Blanche:
Carte Blanche, the latest epic album by Païens is the result of two years of experimentation of new musical themes and styles. Renowned for their instrumental jazz/rock style, the group explores looping this time around, along with rhythms borrowed from the world of electronic music, Produced by ex-Barenaked Ladies' Andrew Creeggan, Carte Blanche is available through the Païens' online store!

MiRthkon -
Snack(s):
Snack(s) is the greatly awaited and anticipated 2nd album by this great Oakland, CA sextet of dual guitars, dual woodwinds, bass and drums. There's also vocals and some keyboards. The group mixes contemporary sounds (i.e. the guitars are often 'crunchy') with stop on a dime avant-progressive influences such as Picchio dal Pozzo, Miriodor, Blast, Henry Cow, Frank Zappa, etc. There's really not much more to say other than if Picchio and Miriodor really float your boat and you want to hear complex, modern rock music that touches on the influences I have mentioned but that already have their own sound, then this is your place to stop for a snack. This release will be a new milestone for lovers of RIO and the avantgarde, highly recommended. Snack(s) is available on Bandcamp in digital format and on the Wayside Music website in single CD format.
